Bubba Watson and longtime caddy Ted Scott were a seemingly bulletproof partnership, with Watson winning two Masters and 10 PGA Tour events during her 15-year tenure despite enduring some public stupidity on the court.

That’s why it came as a surprise when Watson announced last September that the two would be going their separate ways at the end of the season. Scott eventually took over the bag for Scottie Scheffler while Watson hired Gabe Sauer.

Watson stressed his love and gratitude for Scott when announcing their split on social media, but many have wondered what the reason for the split might be. After signing for a finals 71 at Augusta National on Sunday, Watson finally revealed his surprise rationale.

“I have no regrets and I don’t think he does,” Watson said. “[Scott] has now made more money without me. He needed ten more years. I haven’t told anyone but I’ve had some issues this off-season. Wrote a book about some fights. My wrist, I’ve had a wrist injury for the past year. Had some PRP.

“So I called him and told him that. I said look man I’m 43 years old. I don’t know what I’m going to do. My wrist is killing me. He’s like he needs ten more years and I gave him – I felt like a nice retirement package when we split up, but we split up on each other.

Watson said he and Scott are friends who still text each other, hang out and play practice rounds, but his own strangers prevented him from committing to Scott.

“I can’t tell him what I’m going to do in ten years. I can’t tell you what I’ll be doing in six months,” Watson said. “It took him ten years for his personal retirement and things that are going on in his life and so we just parted ways. No big deal.”

Watson said he’s thrilled that Scott not only has a lucrative new gig with Scheffler, but that Scheffler, who he also considers a friend, will have a chance to learn from Scott as Watson did.

“I want nothing more than these young fellows to be better than me, right?” said Watson. “Like I try to teach my kids to be better than me. Not in golf, but in life.”

“[Scott] made more money so I guess he’s glad he left now,” Watson added.

As for the condition of Watson’s wrist, he says he’s not sure how he injured it but suspects it was “bad golf”.

“I did the editing [at the Masters],” he said. “Well, I’m fine.”

Scottie Scheffler coaxed a caddie out of retirement and has since rewarded him with some of the biggest paydays of his career

Scottie Scheffler has won four of the last six events he has competed in, including his first major at Sunday’s Masters.

Just before his hot streak began, Scheffler persuaded retired caddy Ted Scott to carry his bag.

Scott must be happy with his decision and may have made almost a million dollars in the past few months.

25-year-old Scottie Scheffler, winner of four of his last six events, is riding one of the hottest streaks the golfing world has seen since Tiger Woods was in his prime.

Two weeks ago, Scheffler rose to No. 1 in the world after winning the Dell Match Play. This was followed by a win at the Masters on Sunday, donning his first green jacket and securing his first major.

Heading into 2022, Scheffler was a talented young player who was yet to claim a PGA Tour win despite a string of top 10 finishes. Then, in February, Scheffler finally scored his first win at the Phoenix Open and has been on an absolute heat ever since.

At his side throughout the hot phase was veteran caddy Ted Scott. Before teaming up with Scheffler, Scott looped for Bubba Watson for 15 years. Watson and Scott parted ways amicably in September 2021, and Scott was ready to step down from caddy in favor of coaching and tuition until he got the call from Scheffler.

According to Scott, he didn’t make the decision to return to the tour alone.

“I had my kids pray about it,” Scott said after the Masters. “It took a week and they said dad we think you should do it. I said well we’ll pray about this for another week. They said we definitely think you should.

“And that was the deciding factor. I didn’t choose it.”

Scheffler and Scott made their debut together at the RSM Classic in November 2021, finishing T57. But now Scheffler is the highest-ranked golfer in the world, and Scott has cashed some of the biggest checks of his career.

As former PGA Tour caddy Michael Collins revealed on his ESPN+ show America’s Caddy, all PGA Tour caddies have their own deals with their respective golfers. However, there are some general rules that apply universally.

“Every caddy gets a weekly paycheck no matter where their player ends up,” Collins said in an animated video for his show. “If the player misses the cut, the caddy still has to get a paycheck because the caddy pays for all of his own expenses — flight, hotel, car, food, everything.”

“If the guy makes the cut, the standard is 10-7-5 – 10% for a win, 7% for a top 10, 5% for everything else,” Collins said.

Applying the 10-7-5 standard that Collins has been setting on Scheffler and Scott’s run since November, it’s possible Scott has made more than $900,000 in the past six months since he took over Scheffler’s bag with Scheffler earning nearly $8.5 million from his four wins alone.

While the agreement between Scheffler and Scott differs from the formula proposed by Collins, it’s safe to say that Scott is doing pretty well as Scheffler has raked in more than $9 million since the beginning of their relationship.

Watson was happy for his former partner after Scheffler and Scott won the Masters on Sunday.

“I don’t regret it and I don’t think he does either,” Watson said after his lap. “[Scott] has now made more money without me.”

Watson and Scott won the Masters twice together, in 2012 and 2014, with Watson taking home $1.44 million and $1.62 million for his respective green jacket wins.

Since then, the grand prize has grown significantly: the $2.7 million payday that Scheffler earned Sunday almost equals Watson’s two wins combined.

After the win, Scheffler expressed his gratitude and admiration for his new caddy.

“I can’t praise Ted enough as a person and as a caddy,” Scheffler said. “I respect him so much, just as a person. Such a fun guy to be with. He’s a man of faith and I love him. I can’t say enough about him. You know, the qualities you look for in a person, Ted embodies pretty much all of them. He is humble. He’s busy. He is honest. It’s a good time to be here.

As for Scott, it seems his retirement will have to wait a while longer as Scheffler will return to Augusta National in 2023 as the reigning champion.

“I guess I have to keep working,” Scott said.
