How a drama YouTuber lost her entire career overnight
Welcome back to my blog THE KIDS AREN’T ALRIGHT. I missed this room! My life has been extremely hectic these past few weeks with traveling to see my family.
ICYMI posted a lot of stuff for insiders, including two mini-investigations: one on how YouTube fiddled with moderating a child safety breach in a disturbing family vlog; and second, how a vigilante group that includes TV journalist Chris Hansen and YouTuber Seth Francois messed up the release of rape allegations against a TikToker.
Fumbling is a big topic online this week, maybe even more so than usual. Trisha Paytas fumbled in the Frenemies podcast bag. TikToker Bryce Hall fumbled hard in his boxing match with YouTuber Austin McBroom. And on the subject of this week’s blog, a comment/drama channel messed up her entire online identity.
Niche internet drama has always intrigued and captivated me. Regardless of my initial familiarity with the subject matter, when Shakespearean drama erupts in an online community, I will sit and listen as all the gross details are deciphered.
This week, niche internet drama arrived uncomfortably close to home.

Creepshow Art, whose first name is Shannon, is one of the biggest voices in the YouTube drama/commentary community. Drama and Commentary Channels are YouTube’s internal media arm that independently reports and comments on the actions of other YouTubers and social media personalities.
At its peak, Shannon reached around 500,000 subscribers. She started in ArtTube, the YouTube niche where artists record themselves drawing and talk about the footage. She started talking about YouTube and internet drama and exploded from there. I found her in early 2020 and for a while she was one of my favorite YouTubers to listen to.
But as someone who interviewed Shannon, considered her an equal and had a friendly relationship with her, I wanted to add my voice to this saga. Additionally, it’s a compelling story of deception that might resonate with my readers. Let’s dive in.
My personal experiences with Shannon
When I first contacted Shannon, I wanted to interview her about her coverage of Dahvie Vanity and Jeffree Star. Shannon produced many videos in early 2020 about Star’s relationship with other shady Myspace celebrities who were later charged with criminal acts.
As well as providing an in-depth look at her own observations, Shannon spoke about growing up on Myspace and witnessing the Jessi Slaughter “You done goofed” meme first hand. I quoted them in my Slaughter investigation and linked to their videos in some articles about backlash against Shane Dawson.
I really liked Shannon as a content creator. There seems to be a revisionist story where people claim their videos are always boring or unoriginal, but that’s not entirely true. Shannon was smart. Her artistic skills may have been exaggerated as she did a lot of tracing, but her analysis of various internet phenomena and creators was often impressive and compelling, at least to me.
I believe Shannon has demonstrated a deep knowledge of internet psychology including fan behavior and creator manipulation. This shouldn’t come as a surprise. It wasn’t despite a lack of talent that Shannon amassed half a million YouTube subscribers and developed friendships and relationships with dozens of other YouTubers.
I also noticed that Shannon used blatant self-mockery in her videos to win the sympathy of her audience, even though she clearly trusted her own opinion enough to act as a moral arbiter for creators big and small.
But Shannon wasn’t a master manipulator. She made huge mistakes and acted irrationally and overly confidently, causing her reputation to collapse. The first domino to fall was Shannon’s story of posting on a seedy internet forum.
What the Lolkow posts revealed
If you’re deeply into internet drama, chances are you’re only passingly familiar with forums like Lolcow. I’ve scoured influencer gossip forums for years, but like many personalities who report from a place of neutrality, I don’t partake in snoring.
One place I do NOT frequent is Lolcow, an imageboard known for politically incorrect snarking and not entirely dissimilar to Kiwi Farms or even 4Chan. Lolcow is a dirty site who talks shit, but they still have their own set of rules and customs. And in the past, Lolcow has leaked the identities of notable people who have repeatedly used the site’s anonymity to speak out about themselves.
For those who know the history of Myspace, Lolcow outed Kiki Cannibal. It has outed controversial YouTube numbers. These individuals have admitted that Lolcow correctly identified them by tracking their IP addresses over time. Last week, Lolcow claimed to have outed Shannon, and shit hit the fan. Here’s a thread addressing what Shannon posted.
Shortly after Lolcow’s decision, Shannon posted on her Community tab on YouTube and made a few conflicting comments. She confirmed that the IP addresses associated with the posts were really hers, but claimed that her stalker was the one posting from her IP address, which Shannon said was fake.
This hasn’t been possible for several years, and Shannon’s own friends have expressed doubts. Shortly thereafter, Shannon disappeared from the internet, claiming that she will only return if she can legally prove the posts weren’t hers.
The Lolcow posts were absolutely devastating to Shannon’s brand. According to Lolcow, in addition to swearing at her own closest friends, she also appears to have used homophobic, transphobic and ableist slurs โ and viciously attacked other people’s looks.
It goes against Shannon’s whole reputation. She’s made a prolific, profitable online career asking social media figures to take responsibility for actions she deems morally reprehensible โ including bullshit from friends and bigotry. Everyone is hypocritical from time to time, but Shannon seems to have cloaked herself in anonymity to go undercover and blatantly flouting every principle she claimed to stand for.
One of the most compelling elements of Shannon’s alleged Lolcow posts is their seemingly compulsive, irrational nature. Why would Shannon do that? Any self-promotion she gets from her posts would be insignificant compared to her channel’s overall reach. Ditto for negative impacts as Lolcow said she upset her friends and competitors.
This is in sharp contrast to how Shannon has benefited greatly from her channel, amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in advertising revenue, based on insights from other creators at her level.
Shannon’s experience with Emily Artful
On June 12th, ArtTuber Emily Artful released a highly anticipated synopsis of Shannon. In this two-hour video, she breaks down her personal story with Shannon and Shannon’s partner, Anthony, who Shannon says is her husband. This story begins before either Shannon or Emily started their YouTube channels.
Specifically, Emily accused Anthony of raping her during an abusive relationship at a time in Emily’s life when she said she was addicted to heroin. Emily knew Shannon as Anthony’s colleague in California, where the three used to live, according to public social media posts made by each person.
I highly recommend watching the entire video at 1.5x speed.
Emily has no concrete evidence to support all of her claims, but the screenshots, photos and videos she has paint a compelling portrait of years of alleged abuse at Anthony’s hands. The extent of Shannon’s involvement is not fully apparent, but it appears that Shannon deliberately stood by and defended Anthony, despite Emily confronting her about the allegations.
Additionally, shortly after Emily confronted her, Shannon posted a lengthy storytime reflecting all of Emily’s allegations, but from Shannon’s POV as the recipient of the abuse. The sequence of events shows that years before Emily, Shannon proactively shared details of Emily’s story publicly.
These details of Shannon’s life before YouTube horrified me because I heard a different interpretation from Shannon’s own mouth. When I interviewed her in April 2020, I asked Shannon to explain the story of her channel and she told me that she experienced homelessness when she started YouTube.
She audibly choked and during our call described the experience as openly negative. It was the first time I heard about Shannon being homeless and I walked away thinking she had experienced real hardship. It shaped my future opinion of her. In Emily’s video, she shows clips of Anthony explaining that they’ve been living outside of their car from an artistic point of view. That blew my mind.
Shannon confirmed that Emily’s ex Anthony is her current partner in the alleged DMs between her and Emily shown at the end of the video. She never disputed the facts of Emily’s story, much like she confirmed that the lolcow posts were linked to her authentic IP address.
In her denial, Shannon sealed her fate by inadvertently confirming the existence of these breadcrumb marks and patterns.
What can we take away from all of this?
I can’t say with 100% certainty that Shannon has been stalking and harassing Emily for the last ten years. Skepticism is an important aspect here. We’re not privy to Emily’s evidence like IP addresses, and Shannon may never fully confess or reveal crucial details about who did what.
But given all the circumstantial and direct evidence at our disposal, there are gaps in much of what Shannon has presented to the public regarding her history, her values, her relationships, and her content.
As a frequent viewer of Shannons, I was really struck by how similar Shannon’s art and content style is to Emily’s. It casts doubt on Shannon’s behavior over the past five years and her role as someone who has negatively impacted the lives of other creators.
I would also encourage anyone interested or interested in this saga to watch Hopeless Peaches’ videos of Shannon’s claims about her.
The bonds we form online, especially with people we consider equals, are meaningful. When a certain level of trust is built and then completely destroyed, it can be deeply damaging.
Many of Shannon’s former friends have gravitated towards the limelight considering she has disappeared leaving much of the anger, shock, disgust and questions in her wake. I would encourage anyone who has invested in this drama to remember where their energy is best spent. Don’t attack Shannon’s friends out of undue anger.
The question of accountability in this situation has more to do with Emily than with us observers. The things Emily has accused Shannon and Anthony of are criminal and it is up to her to decide whether to pursue a legal route – either way I respect her decision, especially given the prohibitive time and cost constraints that our justice system has to contend with requires.
As viewers, we may be dissatisfied with Shannon’s disappearance. But honestly, I think that’s the best course of action. Your role as a moral arbiter on the Internet has been irrevocably damaged. Not all of Shannon’s opinions were wrong, but she no longer deserves a platform to influence others or harm creators.
I also think this can serve as a healthy reminder to remain skeptical. Spending hours listening to someone can feel like you’re getting to know them. But the Internet can be a persuasive facade. Don’t let just one source guide your opinions. And be careful who you put your trust in.

With nearly 500,000 subscribers, Creepshow Art, whose first name is Shannon, had made a name for itself in the YouTube comments community โ a key category on the platform where creators post their own analysis and opinions on news, politics, YouTube drama, and more stories. Shannon has not publicly revealed her last name.
On June 2, a moderator of Lolcow, an online gossip forum where users post anonymously about influencers, outed the owner of an account they claimed belonged to Shannon.
The forum has a number of rules, including that users may not post “for attention or gain” or “post misleadingly in the third person about themselves.”
The user, believed to be Shannon, had promoted the Creepshow Art channel and its content on the forum, but the account’s 292 posts also contained offensive comments — sometimes referring to race or sexuality — targeting other YouTubers who were posting similar content Post.

Insider has not been able to independently verify that the Lolcow user is Shannon. Shannon did not respond to a request for comment.
Creepshow Art denies that she posted the comments
Allegations that Creepshow Art was running the Lolcow account circulated on social media over the weekend.
Shannon responded in a post on her YouTube Community page, where creators can share updates with their subscribers. She said in the Saturday Post that the person running the Lolcow account was a person named “Amy,” a pseudonym for a woman she “stalked” for “8 years.”
“I totally understand when nobody believes me. I understand if I lose friends because of this,” Shannon wrote. “It’s been like this for almost half my frigging life and I’m sick of it. I’ll keep the rest offline where it belongs, so if you have any questions I’m sorry. I don’t answer them.”
The next day, Shannon released another statement on Instagram, saying she was dealing with the situation “legally” and that she would not post online until she “can prove beyond a shadow of a doubt what happened.” , notโ she did.
