Joe Marler’s wife Daisy is the rock that got him playing for England at the Rugby World Cup

Joe Marler almost missed his chance to play in the Rugby World Cup final.

Just twelve months ago, Marler had announced that he would be giving up his service in England to spend more time with his family.

Marler is happily married to his longtime partner Daisy, with whom he has three children. Jasper, 5, and Maggie, 3, were joined by another newborn just before the start of the World Cup.

The Harlequins star has admitted he’s not particularly comfortable playing elite sport.

But the support of Daisy, who works as a full-time mum, allows him to keep going.

“My wife Daisy is very good at helping me balance the two [rugby and fatherhood],” Marler told FQ Magazine in 2017.

“Sometimes the team has double days and I have to go to bed early, turn a decent eye.

“So she does the night shift with the kids.”

Daisy keeps her private life private and avoids the media spotlight.

It is not known if they will fly to Japan for the Rugby World Cup final on Saturday.

Marler himself made a late decision to enter the competition, having seemingly retired from international rugby 12 months ago.

“I don’t feel like I can give 100 per cent to the England kit anymore,” he said in September 2018.

“It’s not fair to me, the team or my family. I can not anymore.

“It’s not an easy decision. I’ve been thinking about it for a while.

“With England you have to spend an incredible amount of time away and I couldn’t do that anymore.

Image: joemarler17/Instagram) joemarler17/Instagram)

“So now it’s time to go away and bring some new blood into the team. And I look forward to devoting more time to my wife and children.”

But with Daisy’s support, Marler reversed his decision and has played a key role in the England side ever since.

And it’s a decision he certainly won’t regret when he becomes part of the world champion line-up next Saturday night.

Joe Marler

International rugby union player for the British Lions and England

rugby player

Joseph William George Marler (born 7 July 1990) is an English professional rugby union player who plays as a support for Harlequins in the Premiership.[2] He is also a co-host of The Joe Marler Show with Tom Fordyce podcast.

background [edit]

Educated at Maynards Green Primary School and Heathfield Community College, Marler began playing for Eastbourne Sharks at the age of 11. His stepping stones in the game include not only playing for Sussex Under 14-18 but also representing London & South East in 2006.

Marler began his career at Haywards Heath RFC in Sussex, where he played on the same team as fellow England international Billy Twelvetrees.

Club career[edit]

Marler joined Harlequins Academy in 2008 and made his first-team debut in the 2009-2010 season after spending some time on loan at Esher and Worthing. Marler has described his time in the lower ranks as a necessary learning curve that allowed him to learn all the tricks of the prop trade. In particular, he cites the technical advice he received on scrums from one Bobby Walsh, a former coach.[7] The knowledge gained at this level has enabled him to occasionally cover the narrow-minded side of the scrum.[8]

In May 2011, Marler started for the Quins side that defeated Stade Français in the final of the EPCR Challenge Cup.[9] The following season, Marler played a crucial role in helping the Harlequins clinch their first-ever league title, starting in 2011/12 by defeating the Leicester Tigers in the Premiership final.

Marler captained the Harlequins in the 2014-2015 season, replacing Chris Robshaw due to his commitments as England captain in 2015.[11] Marler then passed the Quins captaincy to his teammate Danny Care the following season. In January 2016 it was announced that Marler had signed a new contract to remain at the club[13] and later that year he started for the Quins side which were defeated by Montpellier in the final of the EPCR Challenge Cup.[ 14]

On 26 June 2021, Marler won his second league title, starting with the Quins side who beat the Exeter Chiefs 40-38 in the all-time highest-scoring Premiership final.[15]

International career[edit]

England [ edit ]

In 2008, Marler was captain of the England U18 national team.[16] He represented England U20 at the 2009 Six Nations U20 Championship[17] and was a member of the squad that finished second to New Zealand at the 2009 IRB World Youth Championship. [18] [19] The following year, he scored twice in a game against Wales in the 2010 Six Nations Under-20 Championship. He also scored a try in a loss to South Africa as England finished fourth at the 2010 IRB World Youth Championship. He was called up to the England squad for the 2010 end-of-year tests as injury protection for David Wilson. In January 2011, Marler started for England A against Italy.[23]

Selected for the 2012 South Africa summer tour, Marler made his senior debut on June 9, 2012, beginning with the opening Test loss to the Springboks. Marler was selected for the 2013 series against Argentina[27] and then became a permanent member of the squad.[6] Coach Stuart Lancaster included Marler in his 2015 Rugby World Cup squad[28] and he started for the hosts in the pool stage as they failed to reach the knockout stage[29].

New head coach Eddie Jones included Marler in his squad for the 2016 Six Nations Championship[30] and he came off the bench in the final game of the tournament as England defeated France to capture their first Grand Slam in over a decade[31 ] The following year, Marler was given the honor of leading the team in his 50th cap against Scotland in the penultimate round of the 2017 Six Nations Championship.[32] He also started in the final round of the tournament’s defeat by Ireland, which ensured England could not complete consecutive Grand Slams, and also finished a record eighteen consecutive Test wins.

In September 2018, Marler announced his retirement from international rugby[34] but later reversed his decision[35] and rejoined the England squad for the 2019 Rugby World Cup.[36] Marler came off the bench in the semi-final win over New Zealand, replacing Mako Vunipola in the second half in the final as England were defeated by South Africa to finish runners-up.[37]

In March 2020, Marler was banned from playing for 10 weeks after grabbing Alun Wyn Jones’ genitals during a Six Nations game against Wales. As a result of the coronavirus lockdown, the suspension ended without Marler missing a game as every game Marler could have played was postponed.[39]

In December 2020, Marler replaced Ellis Genge in the second half as England beat France in the Autumn Nations Cup final.[40]

British & Irish Lions [ edit ]

On 19 April 2017, Marler was one of 41 players selected for the British & Irish Lions’ tour to New Zealand in June and July of that year. He made five appearances in tour games but not in the Test series against New Zealand.

Barbarians [ edit ]

Marler was drafted into the Barbarians squad in 2019 and made his only appearance for the team against England on 2 June alongside team-mate James Horwill, who was in charge of the team.[43]

Other [edit]

In 2020 Marler wrote a book about his life: Loose Head, Confessions of an (un)professional rugby player, published by Ebury Press.[44] He also hosts The Joe Marler Show podcast.[45]
