Alpo Martinez killed over road rage, not betrayal, reports claim

According to published reports, former Harlem drug lord Alpo Martinez was killed in a dispute over his driving.

The NYPD arrested 27-year-old Shakeem Parker for Martinez’s murder. He faces murder and weapons charges in connection with the killing in the early hours of Halloween.

The NYPD was called to Frederick Douglass Boulevard near W. 147th St. just before 3:30 a.m. on October 31, 2021.

A dark red pickup truck had crashed into parked cars. Alpo Martinez, the driver, had been shot five times in the chest through the vehicle window. He drove the truck about four blocks before it collapsed.

EMS took him to NYC Health + Hospitals Harlem but it was too late to save his life.

Martinez became famous in the 1980s for his murderous manner and mountains of drugs and cash. He has been immortalized in dozens of rap songs and the film Paid in Full.

Martinez was in the witness protection program, so his ID had Abraham Rodriguez’s name and an address in Lewiston, Maine on it.

Alpo Martinez

He had been given a new identity after being released from a Colorado prison in 2015. He had served more than 20 years for his role in 14 murders.

He had also been widely believed to have hit on his former associates to shave off years from a possible life sentence.

Instead of hiding, he was often seen around Harlem, and his driving may have led to his downfall.

The NY Times reports that Martinez was killed because of his penchant for riding his motorcycle dangerously through the streets of Harlem.

A police officer told the newspaper that Martinez collided with Parker over the summer when Martinez disrespectfully drove past Parker on his motorcycle.

How Rich Porter Made A Fortune Selling Crack In 1980s Harlem

Richard “Money Rich” Porter made $50,000 a week selling crack in New York City in the late 1980s – until he was murdered by his partner Alpo Martinez in 1990.

For users and innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire, the 1980s crack epidemic was an apocalyptic hellscape. It was heaven on earth for 25-year-old Rich Porter and his Harlem crew. While the New York City Police Department considered him a middle-level crack dealer, Porter was making $50,000 — a week.

For a few short years, the Harlem native had it all: flashy clothes, women, luxury cars, and street fame. However, as documented in the 2002 film Paid In Full, Porter’s flamboyant lifestyle inevitably caught up with him in 1990. After a rival gang mutilated and killed his 12-year-old brother, Porter was murdered in cold blood by a friend.

“Rich lied to me about something there was no reason to lie about,” Alpo Martinez said. “I gave him the opportunity to tell me the truth not once, but twice. He didn’t die [after my accomplice shot him in the chest] so I shot him in the head. It wasn’t personal. It was a deal.”

Rich Porter and Boom of Crack in New York

Born on July 26, 1965 in New York City, Richard Porter was the eldest of three children who were lovingly raised by their mother, Velma. His sister Patricia was three years younger, while his brother William was born when Porter was already a teenager. By this time, Porter had already started hurling crack around Harlem.

Porter quickly rose through the ranks. Community acquaintances Alpo Martinez and Azie Faison soon became fellow traders, and Porter led a group of street vendors. Intrigued by his income, viewers began calling him “Richie Rich” or “Money Rich.” By the time he was in his 20s, he owned more than a dozen luxury cars and was rumored to never wear the same outfit twice.

Cornered by economic inequality and a lack of opportunity, Rich Porter had embraced the life of a crack dealer. But much of his free time was spent looking after his mother and siblings, as well as their three children: Reshonia, Rhea and Donnell.

At 4 p.m. everything changed. on December 5, 1989, when 12-year-old William still hadn’t returned home from school. Velma Porter herself went to Public School 92 at 222 West 134th Street hoping to find him along the way — only to learn he hadn’t even shown up that day. An hour later she found out why.

“Mom, they have me,” he called on the phone. “I do not know what you want.”

The phone hung up, only for another call several hours later to threaten the 44-year-old mother if she called the police. The anonymous caller asked for $500,000 on a third call at 1am. Tragically, the hopeless mother of three had to tell the man on a fourth call that she didn’t have that much money.

At 3 p.m. On December 6, the caller asked to speak to Rich Porter. The ransom was down to $350,000 but came with instructions to visit the local McDonald’s and look under the toilet sink.

Porter used a family friend to do it – who found Williams’ severed two-inch index finger and an ominous cassette tape.

The murder of Richard Porter

Although it remains unclear exactly where he was abducted, William Porter was abducted from one of the four blocks that separated his 132nd Street home from his school. Within 48 hours, evidence that he had been mutilated was thrown out at McDonald’s on 125th and Broadway. The tape carried heartbreaking tone.

“They cut off my finger,” William said, his voice shaking. “Please help me. They said if you don’t do what they say they will cut my hand off. Please help. Get the money. I love you mom. Tell Pat I love her.”

Left in shambles, Rich Porter and his family listened to the teenager sob for the rest of the tape. The kidnappers called at 9 p.m. to reiterate their demands, with Porter claiming he only had $200,000 in cash. While the kidnappers said they would call him back in 10 minutes, they never did.

About an hour later, after a dispute about the smartest course of action, the family finally contacted the police. On December 10, an unidentified child left a note at his home that simply read, “We still want the money, the child is in pain and needs medical attention.”

Tragically, that never happened when Rich Porter was found riddled with bullets on January 3, 1990 near Orchard Beach in the Bronx. Discovered by locals, he had $2,239 in his wallet. He had been shot multiple times in the head and chest, while his little brother’s body would be found in a pile of garbage bags later that month.

Rich Porter was killed when Martinez’s suspicions that he had put him out of business became deadly. Porter became a local legend, immortalized by rappers like Jay-Z and 50 Cent. In exchange for a reduced sentence, Martinez became a whistleblower and was released after 35 years in prison — only to be killed in the street on Oct. 31, 2021.

After learning about Rich Porter, the notorious crack dealer of 1980s New York, read how Michael Dowd became the NYPD’s most corrupt cop. Then take a look at vintage photos of the Harlem Renaissance.

Road Rage, Not Betrayal, Was Behind Informant’s Killing, Authorities Say

When Alpo Martinez was shot dead in the wee hours of Halloween last fall while carrying a false-name driver’s license, rumors circulated as to who might have finally gotten him. In his decade-long Icarian arc, Mr. Martinez had amassed an extensive list of enemies — first as a ruthless drug lord in the 1980s and then as a federal informant.

However, his death was not a long-awaited revenge for his notorious betrayal, a law enforcement official said.

Instead, authorities believe Mr. Martinez was killed over a street beef due to his penchant for speeding dangerously through the streets of Harlem on his motorcycle.
