NASCAR and McClure’s family confirmed his death on Sunday.
However, no cause of death was released.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office said McClure’s body was sent to the Virginia Department of Forensic Science in Roanoke for an autopsy.
The former driver had suffered from serious health conditions in recent years, including pneumonia, and was diagnosed with a serious musculoskeletal condition in 2019.
McClure suffered at least two concussions in his career and said he experienced persistent headaches, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, sensitivity to light, depression and forgetfulness.
In 2013 he was diagnosed with acute kidney failure and in 2019 he said he was being treated for kidney failure in both kidneys.
He last posted on social media on Saturday.
‘HARD TIME’
Nascar said in a statement, “We are saddened by the passing of former driver and (team) owner Eric McClure. NASCAR extends its deepest condolences to Eric’s family and friends.”
In a statement, McClure’s family said: “It is with great sadness that the family of Eric Wayne McClure, former NASCAR driver, announce his passing on Sunday.
“They would like to thank everyone for their prayers and support at this very difficult time.”
McClure is survived by his ex-wife Miranda and their seven children.
The couple were married from 2004 to 2018.
Very little is known about Miranda or what she does for a living.
In 2018, McClure faced domestic violence charges against his wife, Miranda.
He was sentenced to 12 months probation.
Miranda said her ex-husband choked and hit her in front of their children and that her nine-year-old daughter called 911.
McClure of Chilhowie, Virginia was the nephew of former Cup team owner Larry McClure and spent most of his career racing in the Xfinity Series.
He made 288 career starts in 14 seasons with a career-best finish of eighth at Daytona in 2013. He last raced in 2016.
McClure missed five races in the 2012 season after a fall at Talladega Superspeedway caused multiple injuries, including a concussion and internal bruising.
His racing career was cut short due to ill health, but he formed the Martin-McClure racing team with former driver Hal Martin in 2016.
