Eric Metaxas

American conservative talk show host

Eric Metaxas (born 1963) is an American Christian author, speaker, and conservative radio host. He has written three biographies, Amazing Grace: William Wilberforce and the Heroic Campaign to End Slavery about William Wilberforce (2007), Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy about Dietrich Bonhoeffer (2011), and Martin Luther: The Man Who Rediscovered God and Changed the World via Martin Luther (2017). He has also written humor, children’s books, including political ones, praising Donald Trump, and screenplays for VeggieTales. He has labeled those who recognize US President Joe Biden’s election in 2020 as “enemies of this country”.[1]

Biography[edit]

Metaxas was born in the New York City borough of Astoria, Queens and grew up in Danbury, Connecticut. He graduated from Yale University (1984, B.A., English).[2][3] There he edited Yale Record, the oldest college humor magazine in the United States. Metaxas lives in Manhattan with his wife and daughter.[4] He is Greek on his father’s side and German on his mother’s side; he grew up in a Greek Orthodox environment.[5]

Metaxas grew up in the Greek Orthodox Church, and while he has not officially left (he said he has “great respect”) for it, he attended Calvary-St. George’s Episcopal Church.[6][7] He spoke at Times Square Church.[8] Metaxas, in the words of C.S. Lewis as a “pure Christian”. In 2007 he said his books “don’t touch on anything where Protestant, Catholic and Orthodox Christians differ. They only express the basics of the faith from a basic, ecumenical Christian perspective. They only talk about the Christian faith, they agree.”[6] In his book Martin Luther[9], however, he criticized the political power structures that had emerged from the Catholic Church in the Middle Ages and wrote that it was only with Luther that the true gospel was saved” before under its crushing tangle of ecclesiastical and political medieval structures.”[9]

writing [edit]

Metaxas is the author of more than thirty children’s books, including the bestselling Squanto and the Miracle of Thanksgiving[10] and It’s Time to Sleep, My Love, illustrated by Nancy Tillman.[11] His books have been translated into more than 25 languages.

Metaxas’s If You Can Keep It: The Forgotten Promise of American Liberty and Miracles: What They Are, Why They Happen and How They Can Change Your Life are both New York Times best-selling books.[12][13]

Metaxas’ biography of Wilberforce, Amazing Grace: William Wilberforce and the Heroic Campaign to End Slavery, was the companion book to the 2006 film.[14]

Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy was named Christian Book of the Year in 2010 by the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association.[15] Bonhoeffer is a New York Times bestseller and climbs to #1 in the e-book category.[16] It also won the 2011 John C. Pollock Award for Christian Biography presented by the Beeson Divinity School and a 2011 Christopher Award. Although the book is popular among evangelical Christians in the United States, Bonhoeffer scholars have criticized Metaxas’s book as unhistorical, theologically weak, and philosophically naive.[19] The German history professor and Bonhoeffer researcher Richard Weikart, for example, credits his “engaging writing style” but claims that Metaxas lacked the intellectual background to properly interpret Bonhoeffer.[20] The biography was also criticized by Bonhoeffer researchers Victoria Barnett[21] and Clifford Green[19]. Despite this widespread and significant criticism of his work by Bonhoeffer experts, Metaxas’ book was hailed by popular magazines as “a weighty, engaging analysis of the life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer” that “brings Bonhoeffer and other characters to life.” “.[22][23]

Martin Luther: The Man Who Rediscovered God and Changed the World was named Editor’s Pick by The New York Times in December 2017[24] and became a bestseller in January 2019.[25] Like his book on Bonhoeffer, Martin Luther von Metaxas was not well received by historians. Carlos Eire wrote that the book was “full of exaggerated claims” and accused Metaxas of writing naïve Whig history by depicting Luther as “a titanic figure who single-handedly slays the dragon of the Middle Ages, rescues God from an interpretive dungeon, an individual invents liberty and ushers in modernity.”[26] Catholic church historian John Vidmar writes that Metaxas ignored more than a century of Lutheran research to write a “comprehensive and largely uncritical endorsement of Martin Luther.” To arrive at his conclusions, Vidmar writes: “Metaxas must misunderstand, denigrate, and then caricature in colloquial, casual, and often flippant language, centuries of human endeavor and achievement.”[27]

Seven More Men, released in April 2020, is the sequel to Seven Men[28].

Is Atheism Dead?, released October 19, 2021, is a response to TIME’s 1966 cover Is God Dead?[29].

Other articles have appeared in the Atlantic Monthly, the New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal.[30][31]

Political views[edit]

Metaxas is a prominent supporter of Donald Trump.[32][33] In 2019, Metaxas released two children’s books titled Donald Builds the Wall and Donald Drains the Swamp in a series titled Donald the Caveman. Other characters in the book are what Metaxas has dubbed “an angry little girl who looks a bit like AOC” and “an angry, crazy old man who looks a bit like a guy named Bernie.”[34] In a November 2019 interview with Franklin Graham, Metaxas said that “screaming protesters” were “almost demonic” towards Trump.[35][36]

During a White House speech in August 2020, Metaxas punched an unarmed protester in the back of the head. Metaxas claimed the protester had been “very menacing for a long time.” The protester denied that characterization, saying he “spoke [profanity],” but gave Metaxas no reason to attack. The protester stated his intention to press charges against Metaxas.[37][38]

After the 2020 presidential election, Metaxas backed Donald Trump’s claim that the election was tainted by voter fraud, predicting on Twitter, “Trump will be sworn in. Metaxas also told Trump on the Metaxas radio show that “Jesus is with us in this fight” to bring down the 2020 election. “I would be happy to die in this fight,” added Metaxas.[39][40]

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Metaxas urged its supporters not to get the 2021 vaccine.[41]
