As an immigrant family from Colombia, South America, we had to rely on our family values and truly support each other. My mother, who is the backbone of the family, made every effort to show as much love as possible to each and every one of my family members. Being her firstborn and the eldest of her two sons, my mother and I have always had a special bond.

When you really, really love your family, even the smallest moments are memorable and meaningful — even if you’re just eating at the dinner table or watching TV on the weekends. However, there is one special memory that my mother still draws my attention to to this day. When I was seven years old, my mother was under a lot of stress and one day I found her crying alone in the living room. After she explained what was going on in my seven-year-old way, I told her to have faith and not to worry, and I reassured her that I would always be there for her.

When she reminds me of that moment, she adds that nobody expects their children to inspire or motivate them. But for her, this moment did both; and for me it made me respect her even more. I think that’s one of the reasons she was there for me throughout my wrongful conviction and gave me that love, support and strength when I needed it most.
On the day I was wrongly arrested, the detectives came to my home and dragged me in front of my mother. She was crying and I was scared and vulnerable. I remember feeling my mother’s pain at that moment. I knew she felt mine too. It was like two twins being separated — that’s the connection people talk about when they describe a mother’s love.

She was there for me – a young, skinny 18-year-old who had never been in a situation like this before – in every way she could and it was extremely meaningful to have her support. While in prison there were times I wanted to take my own life, but I was always reminded of their strength and our connection.
During my detention, I called my mother at every opportunity. Remember that in prison I was only allowed to use the phone for ten minutes up to three times a week. It was often difficult to reach my family because they were at work and there were no cell phones back then. If I wasted my phone time calling them, I couldn’t use the phone later in the day. When I spoke to my mother, there is only so much that can be said in ten minutes. You want to talk about a lot, but you have to try to figure out the most important things you want to say.
My mother visited me as often as she could, no matter how far away I was or how difficult it was financially for her and my father. At the end of each visit, my mother would always hug me and cry, and I would try to hold back my tears so she wouldn’t see me cry. When the guard searched me afterwards, I cried and the officer said, “Why are you crying? Is it really that humiliating for you?” He didn’t understand that I was so down, I didn’t care how humiliating it was to be searched; I cried because I saw my mother leaving and I didn’t know when I would see her again.

I recently asked my mom why she treats me like this and she said, “I haven’t had you in 25 years. I want to make sure nobody ever takes you away from me again.”

I realize my wrong beliefs and everything we’ve been through as a family scared my mom, so now she’s really just trying to hug me and make sure I’m well taken care of. She always asks me: “Did you eat today? Did you do that today?” And I tell her not to worry about me – I’m fine. Sure, sometimes it’s a challenge to feel like a kid again; but at the end of the day being able to spend time with my mother again is a nice experience.

But, he testified, the detective called him a liar and “got enraged” – he slapped his face, grabbed his hair and kicked him to the ground. He said the detective told him that if he wanted to go home he had to repeat a story indicating his involvement, which the two rehearsed.
“I was scared,” Mr. Hincapie testified. “I thought I wouldn’t make it out alive.”
Three witnesses also came forward to testify that Mr Hincapie was not on the tube platform when Mr Watkins was stabbed.
Mr Hincapie had been in prison for just over 25 years when a state judge overturned the conviction in 2015 and ordered a new trial. He was released from custody the same day. In September, prosecutors lost their appeal against that decision.
On Wednesday, Eugene R. Hurley III, an assistant district attorney, maintained the position in the State Supreme Court in Manhattan that Mr. Hincapie’s confessions were free and truthful, even as he recommended that the charges against Mr. Hincapie be dismissed.
“However, this decision does not mean that the prosecution has concluded that Mr. Hincapie is innocent,” Joan Vollero, a spokeswoman for the prosecutor, Cyrus R. Vance Jr., said in a statement. “Rather, the passage of time – 26 years – has reduced the quality of the evidence against the accused.”
Ronald L. Kuby, an attorney for Mr. Hincapie, said in court that he was disappointed with the prosecutors’ stance. Mr Kuby said he had hoped prosecutors would express some regret at how the case was handled and “express some appreciation that we usually get it right but got it wrong on this one”.
