Julio Vaqueiro to become new evening news anchor for ‘Noticias Telemundo’
Telemundo late-night host Julio Vaqueiro has been announced as the newest host of the signature evening news show, Noticias Telemundo.
Vaqueiro, an Emmy Award-winning journalist, will be the lead anchor for the Spanish-language network’s September 27 evening news program, which airs weekdays at 6:30 p.m. ET, according to a press release from Telemundo.
The news comes more than a week after it was announced that award-winning Latino journalist José Díaz-Balart is stepping down as the program’s weekday host to host his own weekday MSNBC show, Jose Díaz-Balart Reports, which premieres in September should have. 27

Vaqueiro, who currently hosts the network’s nightly weekday newscast, will also cover Telemundo’s news programming, breaking news and special event coverage. Vaqueiro, who is from Mexico, sees his new role as a privilege.

After moving to the United States, he was a co-host for Telemundo 52 in Los Angeles before joining Telemundo’s national news network in 2017 as a co-host of the weekend news show Noticias Telemundo Fin de Semana.
Since then, Vaqueiro has covered the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2020 presidential race, immigration issues at the US-Mexico border, and Venezuela’s political and economic crisis.

Telemundo is moving late-night news anchor Julio Vaqueiro to its signature evening news show, Noticias Telemundo, the Spanish-language network announced Thursday.
Vaqueiro takes over the job from veteran host Jose Diaz-Balart, who gets daytime programming on parent company NBC Universal’s cable news channel MSNBC. Diaz-Balart, who also serves as the weekend anchor for NBC Nightly News, will continue to do specials for Telemundo.

This award is given in recognition of an individual’s contributions to the advancement of television programming in the language and particularly his (or her) approach to catering to the target ethnic audience.
“To me, one of the greatest privileges a journalist can ask is to serve Hispanic audiences,” said Vaqueiro, the Emmy-winning host of Noticias Telemundo Fin de Semana, the weekend news show that airs Saturdays and Sundays at 6:30 p.m clock is broadcast. ET. “The people watching are the hard-working immigrant families who came to the United States to better their own lives. And we owe it to these people to do our job as well as possible.”

MCN: What kind of stories you report on Telemundo have had an impact?
Julio Vaqueiro: In the beginning there were so many stories about the criminal organizations that the government was dealing with. The War on Drugs in particular was extremely bloody. It still is, but that was the beginning and we started to learn how the drug cartels worked. It was very challenging for me because this was the first major ongoing news story that I covered and I basically spent my four years in Mexico City working on it.
When I moved to the United States, I was able to connect with the immigrant community, the Hispanic community, and talk about their stories. So many families living here feared the risk of being separated and it’s very difficult to be the same person and journalist when you listen to the stories of immigrants who left everything behind just to look for an opportunity here.
Last year I was at the border and followed the family separation policy. These images of the separated families made it impossible not to change after these stories were reported.
MCN: How has your job changed in the last 10 years?
JV: In the beginning, Telemundo was really a very different network, certainly not the size it is. But digitization has really changed the way we all do our jobs. When I started out as a news correspondent in Mexico City, digital wasn’t even a thing. And now we have to acknowledge that the industry is changing and we are moving into a digital landscape.
We’ve basically doubled our size to a team of multimedia journalists producing stories for digital, linear and social platforms. In addition to working on our daily news programs, we are now in constant contact with our audience through digital and social media, which can change everything we do at any time. Everyone has a voice now and we need to incorporate that into our work.
MCN: Do you find the growing digital landscape advantageous for your work as a journalist?
JV: I think it’s a great opportunity to be in touch with so many people who can follow your work and you can now find out about this digital option. We must learn to use them optimally. But there is also a risk of misuse. There is a risk that people may receive information from others who are not reporters or qualified to present facts and information. You need to know how to use social media, follow the right people, listen to the right people and understand where the information is coming from.”
MCN: Has your job become more challenging in the current turbulent political world?
JV: What’s unique about this job is that it’s always challenging, no matter what, no matter who is in the White House, no matter what’s going on in the world. But with President Trump in the White House, we need to be more focused and think about what our values are and how relevant we are to our communities. We must focus on providing information based on traditional values, truth and honesty. And we need to verify our sources. You need to be constantly on standby for what’s going to happen next.
MCN: Where do you see yourself in the future?
JV: I still see myself working for Telemundo trying to do my best to prove my ability to report, find new stories and communicate with our audience. I also see myself writing, maybe a book, maybe. And I just want to try and improve the way I work and the way I serve my community. With that role comes great responsibility to the people we serve.
