Google announced on Wednesday that it was removing its global head of diversity strategy and research, Kamau Bobb, after a 2007 blog post surfaced in which he made anti-Semitic comments.
The company said Bobb would be assigned to a STEM research role.
The Washington Free Beacon uncovered a blog post by Bobb titled “If I Were a Jew” this week. The report released on Tuesday included excerpts from the post.
“If I were Jewish, my insatiable appetite for war and killing in self-defense would worry me,” the now-deleted post reads.
“If I were a Jew today, my sensitivity would be tormented. I would find it increasingly difficult to reconcile the long cycles of oppression that the Jewish people have endured and the insatiable appetite for vengeful violence that Israel, my homeland, has now acquired.”
The post appears to have been written after an outbreak of violence between Lebanon and Israel in late 2007.
“I don’t know how I would reconcile that identity with the behavior of fundamentalist Jewish extremists or Israel as a nation,” Bobb wrote. “The details would confuse me. I would not understand those who claim that the bombing of Lebanon, the slaughter of Lebanese people and the extensive destruction of Beirut are justified in retaliation for the capture of some soldiers.”
Several leading Jewish groups, including the Simon Wiesenthal Center and Stop Antisemitism, tweeted that Bobb should be fired.
In a statement Wednesday night, Google said it had “condemned the past writings of a member of our diversity team that cause deep offense and pain to members of our Jewish community and our LGBTQ+ community.”
“These writings are undoubtedly hurtful,” the statement continued. “The author takes note of this and has apologized. He will no longer be part of our diversity team going forward and will focus on his STEM work.”
Bobb and Google did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.
Bobb was Google’s diversity chief for nearly three years, according to his LinkedIn profile.

“We unequivocally condemn the past writings of a member of our diversity team, which deeply offend and hurt members of our Jewish community and our LGBTQ+ community,” Google said. “These writings are undoubtedly hurtful. The author acknowledges this and has apologized.”
Bobb’s removal from his role as diversity chief comes days after the Washington Free Beacon surfaced his blog post.
In the post, he described how he believed Jews should view the Middle East conflict as he attacked Israel’s actions in Gaza and Lebanon at the time. He then was a research associate in the technology department at Georgia Tech.

“Self-defense is undoubtedly an instinct, but I would be afraid of my increasing insensitivity to the suffering of (of) others. My greatest torment would be that I misinterpreted the identity my story offers and implemented spiritual and human compassion with self-righteous impunity.”
Bobb – a graduate of Brooklyn’s Midwood High School – slammed the Israeli government, arguing that Jews should be “tormented” by the country’s actions and saying Jewish suffering, particularly the Holocaust, should in theory give them more “human compassion.” to lend.
“If I were a Jew today, my sensitivity would be tormented. I would find it increasingly difficult to reconcile the long cycles of oppression that the Jewish people have endured and the insatiable appetite for vengeful violence that Israel, my homeland, has now acquired,” he wrote.
“That reconciliation would be particularly difficult now, in November, 79 years after Kristallnacht — the night of the broken glass,” Bobb continued.
“The anniversary of that terribly monumental day in my history would make me pause. It would force me to reflect on the legacy of extraordinary human suffering. I may wonder how the vicious outbreak of cruelty in the mid-20th century influenced the shape of my identity as a Jewish person and our collective identity as a Jewish people,” he added.
In other comments on conflicts in the region, he wrote: “I don’t know how to reconcile this identity with the behavior of fundamentalist Jewish extremists or Israel as a nation. The details would confuse me.
“I would not understand those who claim that the bombing of Lebanon, the slaughter of Lebanese people and the extensive destruction of Beirut are justified in retaliation for the capture of some soldiers,” Bobb continued.
“I wouldn’t understand the concept of collective punishment to cut off gas, electricity and water to Gaza residents because they are attacking Israel that is fighting against them. It would be ruthless for me to see Israeli tanks rumble through Ramallah bearing the Star of David, destroying buildings and breaking the glass,” he added.
Bobb reportedly sent an apology to the company’s Jewgler employee resource group this week.
“My blog is a place for my personal reflection on a range of complex issues spanning years. After reading it again and seeing the pain it caused, I want to respond directly and honestly,” he wrote in an email obtained by The Post.
“First let me excuse you. what i wrote roughly characterized the entire jewish community. what was intended as criticism of certain military actions fed anti-Semitic tropes and prejudice. I think we can all agree that there is no easy solution to this situation. but that is beside the point. The way I expressed my views on this conflict was hurtful,” Bobb wrote.
“My work here at Google is focused on expanding the computing pathways through our interface with educational institutions. The world is leaving us all insecure and unsettled right now. I certainly don’t want to contribute to that,” he wrote.
“None of this changes or excuses the words I wrote – but I am deeply sorry for them,” he added.
