DURHAM, N.C. – Like many kids who started playing basketball at an early age, Kara Lawson aspired to make the sport a professional career. It started with Lawson showing up at Bill Gibson’s office, as his point guard had done on many occasions since he arrived at the school a year earlier. During that visit, among other things, they discussed Lawson’s plans not only for a few years from now, but also where she might envision herself in the decades to come.

“She’s like, ‘Well, I want to be a coach,'” Gibson said. “And I said, ‘Well, a high school coach isn’t.’ And she said, ‘No, I don’t want to be a high school coach.’ ‘Oh, you want to be a college coach?’ not become a college coach. I want to be an NBA coach.”

The two spoke recently, but Lawson hasn’t offered Gibson a job — at least not yet. Instead, Gibson wanted to congratulate his esteemed student on becoming the Duke women’s basketball coach, with a mandate to revitalize one of the sport’s iconic brands that had fallen into relative disrepair.
From 1998 to 2013, the Blue Devils reached the NCAA Tournament regional finals 11 times and appeared in four Final Fours, losing twice in national championship play. Since 2014, Duke has not progressed past the round of 16 and has missed the NCAA tournament in two of the last four seasons.

Former coach Joanne P. McCallie resigned early last month on a year’s remaining contract, and 10 days later Duke made it official by announcing the 1999 Washington Post All-Met Player of the Year as the fifth coach in program history, Lawson’s first gave college job.
“Everything she does, she does her homework,” Gibson said. “She’s studying the game. She really analyzes it. She’s a student of the game, and always has been. That was part of what made her above everyone else. She understood what was going on in the game, what was being done and how to react.”

For that life skill, she leaned on Pat Summitt, who had won a recruitment battle to bring Lawson to Tennessee. Stanford and, coincidentally, Duke were involved in every detail.
“One of the smartest players”
Lawson arrived in Knoxville, Tenn. in the summer of 1999 with a florid high school resume, a penchant for passing rather than scoring, and a mastery of the intricacies of the sport that belied her freshman year in a program that was the gold standard in women’s basketball.
But to lay claim to playing point guard for the Lady Vols, Lawson had to be able to convey her wisdom throughout the dressing room, speaking clearly, decisively and at times inspiringly in front of her teammates. The process was fraught with obstacles.

Summitt, the most successful coach in Division I history when she retired in 2012, had Lawson speak to the team on random topics, putting the finance major in awkward situations while the freshman grew into increasing responsibility as the primary decision maker the court.
Lawson enrolled in a public speaking class at Summitt’s urging. The nerve-wracking experience has served Lawson immeasurably in the years since, transforming the self-proclaimed introvert into an authoritative voice off the bench or on camera.
“Pat, one of your superpowers was working on your weaknesses as a person early on as a young woman and working with you to build on those areas,” said Lawson, who serves on the school’s board of trustees. “I’ll never forget the first thing she said to me: ‘Kara, you’re one of the smartest players I’ve ever had.’

“She said, ‘You’re one of the hardest working players I’ve ever had, but your ceiling will always be lower unless you learn how to communicate. So you can be hardworking and intelligent, but if you can’t communicate with people, you won’t be able to reach those higher levels of leadership.’”
Lawson became so knowledgeable in public that after leading Tennessee to four SEC championships, three Final Fours and two berths in the national championship game, she joined ESPN in 2004 as an analyst for the NCAA women’s basketball tournament.
While also playing in the WNBA — Lawson was picked fifth in the 2003 draft — she became an NBA courtside reporter in 2006 and an analyst for men’s collegiate basketball in 2010, both with ESPN. During that time, she won a gold medal with the US women’s national team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Two years after retiring from the WNBA, including her final two seasons with the Washington Mystics in 2014 and 2015, Lawson joined NBC Sports Washington, then known as CSN Mid-Atlantic, as the principal analyst for the Washington Wizards broadcasts. He didn’t hesitate, confident that given her rich strategic knowledge as a former player and TV analyst, Lawson was more than capable. She also had coaching experience with USA Basketball’s three-on-three teams at FIBA competitions and ahead of the Tokyo Olympics, which were postponed this year due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.
“I observed. I took notes,” Lawson said of Stevens. “I asked questions, had conversations with him because I knew that eventually – I didn’t think it would be so soon – I would be a team would lead. You don’t know where it’s going to be. They don’t know what level it’s going to be. But you want to prepare, so you’re ready when it happens.”
She also had the advantage of playing for the most successful coach in WNBA history, Mike Thibault, first with the Connecticut Sun and then with the Mystics.

Lawson acted as player-coach in many ways involving the Mystics, learning game management and Thibault’s player evaluation techniques. He also gave insights into everyday life in the NBA, after having worked as an assistant with the Los Angeles Lakers and the Chicago Bulls, among other things.
One of Lawson’s lasting contributions during her time in the district was mentoring Natasha Cloud, who was selected as a second-round draft pick in 2015. Her extensive work with Cloud, who has emerged as one of the WNBA’s top two-way guards, underscored Lawson’s coaching acumen.
“It was funny: I was talking to Natasha once about a year after Kara stopped playing and she was like, ‘Boy, I miss those daily conversations,'” Thibault said. “You don’t really know if they’re that important when you hear them. But now, when you’re the one doing it, those things are starting to come back to you.”
