California pastor demonstrates how not to apologize for anti-gay evangelism
Mike Erre is the senior pastor of the First Evangelical Free Church of Fullerton, a mega-church in California. In response to last week’s controversy over Pastor Louie Giglio’s withdrawal from the dedication ceremony over his previous anti-gay comments, Erre posted an “open letter to the LGBTQ community” on his Facebook page. At first it seems that Erre genuinely apologizes for the harm done to LGBT people by Christian conservatives’ condemnations:
I want to begin by simply confessing the great harm that we Christians have done to you in Jesus name. Our anger, hostility, and antagonism toward you have no place in the community that is meant to represent Him. I am so sorry. Far too often in the Christian community we are rightly labeled as homophobic, mean and narrow-minded.
I have several friends who are gay and they have enlightened me about the heavy burden many of you carry when you are rejected, ridiculed, and rejected by those in the church. Instead of offering helpful care, wisdom and encouragement, we have often turned you away in disgust. We talked too much and listened too little. I regret this. And I know that Jesus does that too. He occupied a very sensitive place in his ministry and priorities for those marginalized by the religious leadership of his day.
Unfortunately, Erre isn’t really interested in righting wrongs. He goes on to redouble the belief that gays and lesbians must give up their attraction in order to be right with God:
Some of us have also told you that salvation or coming unto Jesus means being automatically converted to a straight person. I think transformation is possible, but often we seem pathetically naïve when it comes to all the factors that go into this issue. As far as I can tell, one’s sexual orientation is not the determining factor in one’s eternal destiny. If my friendships are any indication, many yearn to follow Jesus fully and completely, yet continue to struggle to balance their faith with their desire for intimacy (sexual or otherwise) with someone of the same sex. We have failed to live the good news of Jesus. please forgive us
I also think that sometimes the gay community isn’t entirely honest with you either. For one thing, the gospel of Jesus Christ proclaims that our desires are not our destiny. They can be overcome and placed in their proper context. Our wants don’t have to become our needs. Entry into the kingdom of God through Jesus makes possible things that were thought impossible before him. We don’t have to be at the mercy of arbitrariness. Salvation is found neither in self-gratification nor in unhealthy repression or denial. Jesus offers a third way.
One last thing. I disagree with those who think that the most important thing about you is your sexual orientation. The most important thing about you is that you, as a human being, are made in the image of God. As an image bearer you are a person who has dignity, honor and worth. They, like the rest of us, are also broken and inclined to what is worst for us. But the good news is that Jesus came to set things right. He invites you to this salvation. Please don’t blame Him for the sins of the church.
Erre seems to recognize that condemning homosexuality is harmful to gays and lesbians, and yet he continues to do so. He fails to recognize that sexual orientation is experienced at all times, not just when people are intimate. Expecting gays and lesbians to repress their identities in order to find “transformation” is the very damaging message Erre claims to distance himself from.
Last week, Terry Gross spoke to outgoing Bishop Gene Robinson on NPR’s Fresh Air, and he gave a rousing response to Christians’ suggestion that gays and lesbians are somehow not gay or lesbian if they just don’t respond to their attraction: ROBINSON : I’m not only gay when I’m sleeping with my husband. I’m gay all the time. I’m gay right now and I’m talking to you. And it affects how I deal with the world, how I deal with people. And it comes out of that notion that it’s okay to be gay as long as you don’t act on it. Well, first of all, I don’t think that — I think that statement is disingenuous because the people who say that aren’t pretending that being gay is okay. But take her word for it, you know when does one go gay? I say laughing to a more conservative audience, you know, OK, so if it’s ok to be gay but doesn’t act on it, could two men live together? If we sleep in two single beds, could we sleep in the same bedroom? Well, could we sleep in the same bed if we weren’t touching? Could we touch as long as we just hold hands? I mean at what point, at what point is it gay? You know what I mean? It just doesn’t make sense. And it comes out of what I think is a very masculine understanding of sexuality, which is that you’re only sexual when you’re making love. But the fact of the matter is, we’re sexual all the time, and this split between being gay and acting gay strikes me as ridiculous at best and cruel at worst. Erre may want to do the right thing about gays and lesbians, but his letter suggests he doesn’t have even the most basic understanding of their lived experience. If he really wants to show them his love and support, he must learn to respect their right to be a whole being. He cannot expect forgiveness if he is still in denial of the reality of who he is speaking to.
