Meet the Scholars
Cohort VI
Dassi Mayerfeld grew up in Teaneck, New Jersey and graduated from Manhattan High School for Girls (MHS) in 2021. She was editor-in-chief of Eastward, Manhattan High School’s literary and arts journal, and as a behavioral shadow at the Friendship Circle, interned in a biochemistry lab at Cornell University, competed in the ISACA Cybersecurity Competition, and regularly submitted writing and artwork for MHS publications, many of which have won awards from the New York Times and the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. After graduating from MHS in 2021, she spent a year at Michlalah in Jerusalem, where she focused on the in-depth study of Tanakh, Halakha and Hashkafa. This summer, Mayerfeld will intern at a Cornell University Alzheimer’s research lab at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. As a Straus Scholar at Yeshiva University, Mayerfeld hopes to major in biology with a minor in studio art. On campus, she looks forward to working with special needs children through after-school programs while pursuing her interests in poetry and drumming.
Yinon Gurvich was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, where he attended Ida Crown Jewish Academy (ICJA). At ICJA he participated in Model UN and co-founded the school’s chess club. Gurvich was a member of the ICJA wrestling team and won the Wittenberg Invitational Tournament and Most Outstanding Wrestler Award in his junior year. After graduating from ICJA in 2021, Gurvich spent a year at Yeshivat Sha’alvim in Israel. As a Straus Scholar at Yeshiva University, Gurvich hopes to earn a dual degree in math and finance, with an additional focus in the humanities in the Straus Scholars Program.
Ezra Seplowitz grew up in Teaneck, New Jersey and attended the Torah Academy of Bergen County (TABC). At TABC, Seplowitz served as President of the Israel Advocacy Club and was Editor-in-Chief of TABC’s Kol Torah and Israel Report. He twice served on the student council and managed both TABC’s track and field and ice hockey teams. Seplowitz was a fellow at Write On For Israel, a two-year leadership and education program for Jewish high school students, and was invited to attend the 2018 AIPAC Schusterman High School Summit Honor Society, recipient of the school’s Leadership Award and Yeshiva University’s Torah U’Maddah Award . He studied at Yeshivat Sha’alvim for two years and recently spent a summer at Rav Meir Goldwicht’s Kollel at Camp Mesorah. A Straus Scholar at Yeshiva University, Seplowitz hopes to earn a dual degree in philosophy and psychology, and he hopes to join the YUPAC and YU roller hockey teams.

Ruchama Benhamou, commonly called Ru, is originally from Miami, Florida. She moved to Los Angeles for high school and attended YULA Girls High School, where she rose to become the captain of the flag football and soccer teams and received the 2020 CIF Comeback Player of the Year Award. She was also editor of her school newspaper, editor-in-chief of the yearbook, and volunteered for Yachad, experiences that taught her the importance of leadership, problem-solving, and forward planning. Passionate about STEM, she looks forward to pursuing a career in science while studying philosophy and humanities in the Straus Scholars Program.
Daniel Ganopolsky was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from Rambam Mesivta in Lawrence, New York in 2019. There he was captain of the debate and mock congress team as well as a member of the mock trial team. In high school, Daniel founded the Israel Today newspaper, a biweekly publication focused on current events in Israel, and served as President of the Israel Action Committee. He studied for two years at Yeshivat Migdal Hatorah in Israel, where he focused on Jewish Studies, Philosophy and Physics. While studying in Migdal, he attended the Tikvah Overseas Students Institute, focusing on the political, economic, and moral dilemmas faced by Jews in modern times. Daniel enjoys working behind the scenes and watching the political process unfold at the grassroots level. He lobbied AIPAC and NORPAC on Capitol Hill several times throughout high school. He also worked as a campaign assistant for Michael Grimm and Steve Saperstein during their campaigns. Daniel is very excited to join the Straus Scholars Program where he plans to study Economics and Political Science.
Racheli Gottesman grew up in Woodmere, New York and graduated from the Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway (HAFTR) in 2020. During her time at HAFTR, Racheli captained the language team, volleyball team, and the Shakespeare team and competed as a member of the Torah Bowl, Debate, Model Congress, and Model United Nations teams. In addition, Racheli acted in several theatrical productions, both in school and community theater, and served as a board member of HAFTR’s Thespian Honors Society. Racheli is an intern as a journalist for The Nassau Herald. She spent two summers as a counselor for Yachad and one summer studying and teaching Tora as a member of Camp Moshava’s Beit Midrash program. She recently spent a year studying in Israel with Michlelet Mevaseret Yerushalayim (MMY) and attended the Tikvah Overseas Student Institute.
Yonatan Kurz grew up in Teaneck, New Jersey and attended Torah Academy of Bergen County (TABC), where he was captain of the College Bowl and History Bowl teams, editor-in-chief of the Israel Report, and a member of the Honors Society. After studying for two years at Yeshivat Sha’alvim in Nof Ayalon, Israel, Yonatan is currently a junior studying Political Science and Jewish Studies with a minor in Psychology at Yeshiva University alongside learning as a fourth-generation student in Rav Michael Rosensweig’s Shiur. He is a Fellow of the J. Dunner Political Science Society, Associate Writer at The Commentator, Associate Judge on the Student Court, and has published several articles and essays on YUTorah. During his summers, Yonatan Madrich (Counselor) was with NCSY Kollel and also served as a Legal Research Intern for the General Counsel of the Orthodox Union. He is also a Shevet Glaubach Fellow for NCSY and a member of the Tikvah Collegiate Forum. Yonatan is passionate about the founding and development of modern Orthodoxy and the future of Judaism in America. In his spare time, Yonatan enjoys studying Torah, exercising, reading books on American history and social sciences, and exploring the depths of modern Jewish thought.
Noam Mayerfeld is studying computer science. He participates in the iTutor volunteer initiative, helping students with learning disabilities from local public schools learn algebra. He also teaches science to fourth grade students at a local New York City public school as part of the Start Science program. Noam is a member of YUPAC, a member of the HackerRank Weekly Coding Challenge Club, and he is on the YU chapter Association for Computing Machinery. Noam founded YU Wilf’s new Debate Society, a club that aims to bring together a group of students who enjoy public speaking and debate and are interested in current events and issues. The society hopes to challenge its members to pose new ideas and questions, foster productive and competitive discussions, and arrive at meaningful solutions in a fun and engaging environment.
Allie Orgen was born and raised in Teaneck, New Jersey. She is a graduate of the Frisch School, where she spent four years studying Israel activism and advocacy. Allie served as a public relations and engagement intern for Congressman Josh Gottheimer’s 2020 reelection campaign. Allie spent a year at Midreshet Harova, where she was selected to participate in AIPAC’s first Gap Year cohort. In the spring of 2021, while still a seminary student in Israel, Allie organized and served on the Bergen County Unite for Israel Parade committee, which attracted over 5,000 protesters. Now in her second year, Allie is pursuing a dual major in Political Science and History. On campus, Allie is the vice president of Yeshiva University’s Political Action Club and a board member of the J. Dunner Political Science Society. Allie is a junior officer for Yeshiva University’s National Model United Nations and a member of the Pre-Law Society. Allie spent the Fall 2021 semester as an intern with Republican Jack Ciattarelli’s New Jersey gubernatorial campaign and as an intern at the Teach Coalition, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting school choice. Currently, Allie is a foreign policy intern with Congressman Josh Gottheimer, where she drafts policy memos, drafts legislation, and assists with research. Allie also serves as a policy and research intern for Congressman Lee Zeldin’s New York gubernatorial campaign. In the summer of 2022, Allie is looking forward to participating in the Fund for American Studies DC Summer Internship Program as a student in the International Affairs track.
Jennifer Peled grew up in Los Angeles, California, where she graduated from YULA Girls High School. In high school, she was senior class president and captain of the Model UN, Mock Trial, and Moot Beit Din teams. After graduating, Jennifer Midreshet attended Harova where she enrolled at Tikvah Overseas Institute. Jennifer is currently pursuing a dual degree in Computer Science and Mathematics and looks forward to enriching her work in STEM with a thorough background in Western and Jewish thought. She serves as the vice president of the Machine Learning Club and is a board member of the Computer Science, Engineering, and YU Political Action Clubs. She is also a member of the TAMID Tech Consulting track where she combines her love for Israel with her tech experience. Jennifer spends her free time working as a coordinator for Yachad and attending classes at the Tikvah Collegiate Forum.
Jacob Sundel is from Boston, Massachusetts. In 2019 he graduated from Yeshiva Ohr Yisrael as an AP Scholar with Honor. During his high school years, Jacob was a basketball team captain, a member of the Model Beis Din team, and a recipient of the Rose Ruderman Scholar Award. After high school, Jacob spent two years in Yeshivat Kerem B’Yavneh (KBY) in Israel. Jacob is also an Eagle Scout with Boy Scout Troop 54 of Brookline, Massachusetts. For his Eagle Scout project, Jacob started a yachad chapter in his high school. Jacob enjoys dedicating his time to causes that help people with special needs, such as participating twice in the Friendship Circle Bike Miami and serving as a counselor at Camp Kaylie.

Rebecca Aduculesi is from Teaneck, New Jersey. She graduated from Yeshivat Frisch in 2019 and went on to study in Israel with Sha’alvim for Women. Rebecca is currently a junior in the S. Daniel Abraham Honors Program at Stern College for Women with a major in biochemistry. On campus, Rebecca volunteers as a teacher for START! Science and acts as a mentor for College EDge. She also attends YUNMUN, serves as second class vice president, and is a board member on the Beit Midrash Committee. Rebecca works at the Beren Writing Center, is a peer chemistry tutor and news editor for the YU Observer. In her free time, Rebecca enjoys studying Torah, playing tennis and teaching local students in her community. During the summer of 2021, Rebecca served as a consultant at NCSY Hatzalah Rescue where she had the opportunity to network with campers, teach Torah and become a certified emergency medical responder. In her junior year, Rebecca looks forward to working in Dr. Ran Drori at Stern College. Rebecca really appreciates the Straus Center and all the opportunities it has to offer.
Ayelet Brown was born in Jerusalem, Israel and grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland. Ayelet attended Berman Hebrew Academy, where she learned the importance of community and leadership, and used her energy and organizational skills to volunteer at Friendship Circle (where she serves as program director) and Chai Lifeline. After high school, Ayelet attended Midreshet Lindenbaum. At Yeshiva University, Ayelet is an active member of Project Sunshine and Project IncludED. During the summers, Ayelet worked at Camp Simcha and Camp Kaylie. She has also worked for the Montgomery County Police Department’s Autism/IDD and Alzheimer’s Awareness Program, The Children’s Inn at the National Institutes of Health, and has volunteered with children with special needs and rare diseases. Ayelet is majoring in Psychology and minoring in Public Health. She is interested in child development and the intersection of Judaism and human behavior.
Natan Ehrenreich grew up outside of Cleveland, Ohio, where he graduated at the top of his class from the Fuchs Mizrachi School in 2019. He spent a year studying at Yeshivat Orayta in Jerusalem. As a junior at YU, Natan is involved with organizations like the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) and the Tikvah Fund. On campus, he founded the Executive Council of AEI, through which he hopes to facilitate public policy dialogue on campus with the help of one of the country’s most influential think tanks. He is also a member of the Collegiate Forum of Tikvah. In the summer of 2021, Natan was an Academy Fellow at the Heritage Foundation, studying with leading thinkers in political theory and politics. A Political Science major, Natan has thoroughly enjoyed his service at the Straus Center and looks forward to his first year of personal learning. After graduation, he wants to study law and work in law and politics.
Judah Fortgang grew up in New Rochelle, New York. He graduated from SAR High School in 2018 and spent a year studying at Yeshivat Har Etzion (Gush). Judah currently studies political theory and is vice president of YU’s Alexander Hamilton Society, a club dedicated to guiding its members in foreign policy careers steeped in Hamiltonian vision of strong and principled American leadership. Having spent recent summers with the Tikvah Fund, most recently as a Beren Summer Fellow, he has been exposed to the immense depth and importance of both Jewish and Western thought and looks forward to further studying these rich traditions. After YU, he hopes to pursue a career in law or sports analysis.
Benjy Gottesman was born and raised in New York City. He graduated from the Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway (HAFTR) as a National Merit Commended Scholar in 2018 and has been a member of six HAFTR honor societies. During his high school years, Benjy captained the Torah and College Bowl teams for all four seasons. He also served as the founding captain of the National Speech and Debate Association team and competed in over a dozen tournaments during his tenure. After high school, Benjy spent two years at Jerusalem’s Yeshivat HaKotel where he joined the Bergman Family Leadership Program and led the revitalization of the Chabura Family Leadership Program. During his stay in Israel he also attended the Tikvah Overseas Student Institute. During the summer, Benjy did internships at organizations such as DOROT and the Simon Wiesenthal Center. But Benjy is most passionate about his time as a counselor at Camp Moshava Indian Orchard. Benjy enjoys studying early Christian thought, Torah Hassidus and Ultimate Frisbee.
Reuben Hartman lives in Lincolnwood, Illinois. For high school, Reuben attended the Wisconsin Institute for Torah Study in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. There he was the class representative of the upper school and the best in his class. Reuben is a regular volunteer at Chai Lifeline Midwest mentoring sick children. He also spends his summers as a counselor at Chai Lifeline’s Camp Simcha. Reuben also spent a summer at the Illinois Institute of Technology’s Experiment in Architecture program. After high school he attended Yeshivat Sha’alvim in Nof Ayalon. There he participated in the Tikvah Overseas Students Institute’s “Jews, Morals and the West” program, where he explored diverse theories and beliefs about the realities between religion and politics. Reuben spent the summer between his yeshiva years as an intern with State Representative Rabbi Yehiel Mark Kalish, Illinois’ first rabbi congressman. At Yeshiva University, Reuben plans to major in Political Science and minor in Architecture. Reuben looks forward to spending his college career at the Straus Center finding the divine connection between God’s Torah and the creations in his world.
Penina Spearman hails from Kew Gardens Hills, Queens. She attended Midreshet Shalhevet High School and spent a year in Israel with Michlelet Mevaseret Yerushalayim (MMY) in Jerusalem. Upon admission to Yeshiva University, Penina received the Torah U’madda Book Award for her commitment to her school and community and the ideals of Yeshiva University. She is currently a junior at Stern with a major in philosophy. As a sophomore, she was a teaching assistant at the Tikvah Fund and is a member of the Tikvah Collegiate Forum. On campus, Penina serves on the AEI Executive Council and serves on the board of directors of the Alexander Hamilton Society chapter of Yeshiva University. She is also a board member of the Special Committee on Uyghur Activism at YU. Penina serves on the Student Life Committee as the Student Liaison for the Counseling Center. She is also a Liberal Arts Fellow of the Jewish Foundation for Education of Women (JFEW). In the summer of 2021, Penina completed an internship at the Kohelet Policy Forum.
Cohort III
Ariel Greenwald lives in Riverdale, New York and graduated from SAR High School. While at SAR, Ariel served as the captain of the Model Congress team and played on the junior varsity and varsity football teams. She also took part in several musical theater productions. Most notably, she participated in the Witness Theater program, in which high school students create original dramatic productions by reenacting the wartime experiences of Holocaust survivors. Ariel has always been passionate about Israel. Participating in Jewish Week’s Write On For Israel program has allowed Ariel to develop a strong understanding of the Middle East conflict and the tools to defend Israel. In addition to her extracurricular activities, Ariel was selected as a Tikvah scholar and spent a summer at Yale, where she attended lectures on subjects ranging from Jewish identity to political philosophy. She spent a year in Israel studying in the Gush Etzion region at the Stella K. Abraham Beit Midrash for Women of Yeshivat Har Etzion/Migdal Oz. Ariel continued her commitment to Tikvah during her year in Israel through the Tikvah Overseas Students Institute. During the summers, Ariel enjoys bringing Jewish history and culture to life as the director of experiential education at Camp Stone.
Abigail Pinchot grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland. She graduated from Berman Hebrew Academy in 2018 and spent her gap year studying in Israel at Midreshet Torah V’Avodah. Abby is an English Literature major and a Sociology minor at Stern College for Women. Abby is passionate about art, has won awards for her artwork and continues to sell her artwork. Abby serves as an NCSY advisor and has led NCSY summer programs. She also leads weekly study sessions for teens across the US via Zoom. Abby supports the non-profit organization MyZuzah, whose mission is to deliver as many mezuzahs as possible to Jewish households in the United States. In the summer of 2021, Abby completed an internship at OpenDor Media, where she helped develop and write podcasts and researched for future projects in Jewish history and Israel education.
Eliana Wagner lives in Teaneck, New Jersey and is a senior at Stern College for Women. She is currently studying political science. Through YU’s Pre-Law Judicial Internship Program, Eliana had the opportunity to practice with Judge Ruchie Freier at the Queens County Civil Court and gained an in-depth look at the court process. In recent years, Eliana has served as a legislative intern at the American Jewish Congress and as a congressional campaign intern. On campus, Eliana serves as President of the Campus Israel Club, the Dunner Political Science Society, and the J-Hecht Pre-Law Society. After graduating, Eliana would like to study law and ultimately work in civil service law.
Yehuda Goldberg is a senior at Yeshiva University, where he studies philosophy. Prior to his studies at YU, Yehuda spent two years at Yeshivat Har Etzion. He is interested in the intersection of theology and political philosophy, religious humanism, Haredi thought, and the role that careful study of rabbinic texts can play in shaping Jewish thought. After completing his undergraduate studies at Yeshiva University, he hopes to continue his studies at graduate school and RIETS.
Noam Josse was born in London, United Kingdom. When he was nine, his family moved to New York, where he attended Yeshiva University High School for Boys (MTA) and graduated in 2017. After his MTA degree, he studied in Yeshivat Sha’alvim for two years. At YU, Noam is majoring in Political Science. On campus, Noam helped found the Yeshiva University Chapter of the Alexander Hamilton Society. He has received summer fellowships from the Hoover Institution and the Witherspoon Institute and has worked in a New York City law firm. He also spent a summer at the BRS Kollel. Looking forward to graduating in May 2022, Noam hopes to continue his law studies while continuing his Torah study. Noam is fluent in French.
Ezra Wildes grew up in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, New York. He graduated from Yeshiva University High School for Boys (MTA) in 2017 and spent the following two years in Yeshivat Sha’alvim in Israel. Ezra has always had a deep passion for Torah U’Madda, which led him to found and direct the Torah U’Madda section of MTA’s intellectual publication, The Academy News. During the summers he volunteered for Camp Simcha and was Madrich on NCSY Kollel. Ezra began his experience at the Straus Center as a senior in high school, taking Straus courses in philosophy. A computer science student specializing in data science, Ezra tries to bridge the gap between computer science and his studies in Jewish studies and philosophy. In the summer of 2021, Ezra completed an internship at Dicta, part of the joint research program of Yeshiva University and Bar Ilan University. Ezra used his computer skills to improve access to countless Jewish and Hebrew manuscripts for scholars and laypeople alike.
Cohort II
Baruch-Lev Kelman received his Bachelor of Arts in Jewish Studies with a minor in Architecture from Yeshiva College in 2021. After graduating, he received the Dean Isaac Bacon Award for Excellence in the Humanities and Jewish Studies and the Sidney P. Rosenblum Award for Excellence in the Study of Jewish History. Baruch-Lev’s thesis at the Straus Center examined Jacob Judah Templo’s Retrato in the light of early modern Hebraism. As an undergraduate, Baruch-Lev also served as a Glatt Research Associate at the Center for Israel Studies. Passionate about language and culture, he is fluent in Italian and Hebrew and has studied Arabic. Baruch-Lev is currently pursuing a master’s degree from the Bernard Revel Graduate School and is planning a semester abroad at the University of Urbino to research Jewish contributions to the Italian Renaissance. He will continue his work at the Center for Israel Studies and will contribute to the exhibition Samaritans: A Biblical People, scheduled to open at the Museum of the Bible in 2022.

Elimelekh (Eli) Perl grew up in Dallas, Texas and moved to New York with his family during high school. Prior to Yeshiva University, Elimelekh graduated from DRS Yeshiva High School for Boys and studied at Yeshivat Har Etzion for two years. Now in his fourth year at YU, Elimelekh is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Data Science. He has managed one of YU’s mock trial teams, competed in the intramural Ultimate Frisbee, and co-founded the YU Tech Ethics Society. Elimelekh is also a proud participant in the Tikvah Fund’s college program, having spent a summer as an intern at Tikvah Jewish Ideas on Campus and attending Tikvah’s two-week seminar on Jews and American Politics. He also served as the Tikvah Campus Ambassador at Yeshiva University. In the summer of 2021, Elimelekh worked as a Technology Engineering Analyst in the Controllers Division at Goldman Sachs and will return as a full-time Analyst upon graduation in May 2022. Elimelekh married Yael Blau in December 2021. They live in Washington Heights.

Avishai Samouha was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. After spending a year with Yeshivat Sha’alvim in Nof Ayalon, Israel, Avishai began his journey at Yeshiva University and the Straus Center. At YU, Avishai is a board member of the Medical Ethics Society, co-founder of an a cappella group, and currently conducts academic research in several areas. For his Straus thesis, Avishai plans to focus on how Tora U’madda can be applied to the foreign policy struggles surrounding Iran’s nuclear ambitions. He is also in the process of publishing a scientific paper and review article on the effects of reovirus treatment on KRAS mutant colorectal cancer.

Michael Weiner graduated from Yeshiva University with a degree in Political Science in May 2021. During his time at YU, he explored the field of foreign policy and US-Israel relations through research internships at The American Interest and the Hudson Institute, translating work on Israeli policy articles for Mosaic Magazine, and writing his own columns on these topics for national outlets . In the summer of 2021, he participated in the Tikvah Fund College Fellowship and was a research associate with Elliott Abrams. Mr. Weiner hopes to pursue a career in US foreign policy in the Middle East.
Cohort I
Benjamin Atwood has recently completed a two year degree at Yeshivat Har Etzion in Alon Shvut, Gush Etzion. He lives in Teaneck, New Jersey and graduated from The Frisch High. While at Frisch, Benjamin volunteered as Editor-in-Chief of Frisch’s weekly Torah publication and continued to serve as alumni editor after graduation. Benjamin was also selected as a Tikvah scholar, during which time he participated in a series of lectures on Jewish thought and was also a teacher of Hebrew and Judaic Studies with the Jewish Youth Encounter Program. Benjamin published original research in Frisch’s Bible Scholarship Journal and was the Har Etzion representative for the Religious Zionist list in the World Zionist Congress elections. In addition to his activities in Jewish studies, Benjamin co-captured his high school debate team, co-founded Frisch’s acapella group, served as head of Gabbai, and ran the circuit.

Jonathan Fenster recently completed a two-year degree at Yeshivat Sha’alvim in Nof Ayalon, Israel. He lives in Lawrence, New York and graduated from DRS Yeshiva High School for Boys. During his time at DRS, Jonathan was a member of the debate team and captain of the football team. He was also the recipient of the 2013 Torah Growth Award and the school’s 2013 AP Scholar Award. Jonathan enjoys volunteering and dedicating his time to Chai Lifeline and the Hurricane Sandy Relief Committee. Jonathan also served as the minyan director at Young Israel Lawrence-Cedarhurst. For his accomplishments, Jonathan has been recognized with the Young Israel Lawrence-Cederhurst Teen and College Minyan Award and the 2014 Certificate of Merit from the Nassau County Executive.
Eliott Dosetareh was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. He came to YU right after studying abroad for a year in Israel at Yeshivat Sha’arei Mevaseret Tzion. Er besuchte sein ganzes Leben die jüdische Tagesschule und absolvierte die Atlanta Jewish Academy (AJA) als Mitglied der Klasse von 2015. Als Neuling an der YU entscheidet sich Eliott derzeit für ein Hauptfach, erwägt jedoch ein Studium in Psychologie und Biologie und vielleicht ein Nebenfach in Geisteswissenschaften.
