A Massachusetts teenager was convicted on Tuesday of raping and killing his high school math teacher when he was 14.
Philip Chism followed his 9th grade algebra teacher, Colleen Ritzer, into a school toilet, strangled her, stabbed her at least 16 times, and raped her.

Chism, now 16, was convicted of raping Ritzer in the bathroom but acquitted of a second rape committed with a tree branch in a woods near the school where Chism laid her body. He was also convicted of armed robbery for stealing Ritzer’s credit cards and underwear.
Chism stared straight ahead with no visible reaction as the verdicts were read in Salem Superior Court. His mother refused to speak to reporters as she exited the courthouse.
Later, speaking to the district attorney prosecuting the case, Ritzer’s parents said the verdicts mark a new phase in her life in which they hope to honor their 24-year-old daughter’s legacy.
“While this guilty verdict is the beginning of justice for Colleen, it is certainly no cause for celebration as there can never be true justice for the crime committed,” said Thomas Ritzer, her father. “There remains a tremendous absence in our lives that unfortunately can never be replaced.”
The family, he added, will still be reminded of the crimes if Chism appeals the case and is eventually eligible for parole. “We will go ahead and do our best to find the good in each day,” said Peggie Ritzer, the victim’s mother.
During the trial, his attorney admitted that Chism killed Ritzer but said he suffered from a serious mental illness and was not criminally responsible for his actions. Then he goes back into the classroom, but comes out right away with his hood on. Chism is then shown putting on a pair of gloves as he heads to the bathroom. Minutes later, he is shown coming out of the bathroom with the black pants that Ritzer was wearing.
A bloodied box cutter, mask, gloves and a hooded sweatshirt were later found by police in his backpack while Chism was walking along a freeway in neighboring Topsfield.
Chism’s lawyers had said he should be cleared of the woodland rape, arguing that Ritzer was already dead by that time. However, prosecutors had said Chism did not deliver the fatal stab wounds to her neck until he took her outside.
Chism was tried as an adult. He faces life imprisonment for first-degree murder. As a youth, following decisions by the U.S. Supreme Court and the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts did not receive a life sentence without parole. Adults convicted of first-degree murder in Massachusetts automatically receive life without parole.

They used that argument Monday afternoon as the basis of their motion for Judge David Lowy to drop the unnatural rape charges against Chism. The charges came over allegations that Chism used a stick to injure Ritzer in the woods. But if she was dead by that point, the unnatural rape charge should be dropped, the defense argued.
“I think it’s inevitable that she was killed in the bathroom,” Chism’s defense attorney John Osler told Lowy after prosecutors dropped their case and released the jury for today.
Chism, who was a freshman at the time, was also charged with first-degree murder, robbery and aggravated rape for allegedly assaulting her in the bathroom.
Prosecutors ended their case Monday with a grueling testimony from the forensic pathologist who performed the autopsy on Ritzer. In response to Osler’s motion to dismiss, MacDougall described for the first time in open court the prosecution’s theory as to why Chism had assaulted Ritzer in a school girls’ restroom on October 22, 2013.

“It was a sexually motivated murder,” she said.
Pathologist Anna McDonald said there were two causes of death – asphyxia and the 16 stab wounds to the neck, three of which hit major blood vessels. It’s not possible to say what killed her, but McDonald said she believes the suffocation occurred first because the knife wounds to her neck were so severe that it would have been too difficult to strangle her after she stabbed her . However, McDonald said it’s possible she might have survived the strangulation if she hadn’t been stabbed.
During cross-examination, Osler used McDonald’s testimony to suggest to the jury that Ritzer was most likely dead when Chism wheeled her into the woods in a recycling bin.
McDonald said she was at least unconscious from suffocation and blood loss.
“It’s the far edge of the possibility” that she would have been alive, McDonald said.
After McDonald finished and the jury left for the day, Osler also asked Lowy to dismiss the robbery charges against Chism.
Lowy denied the defense’s motion to dismiss the robbery charge — after the attack, Chism took Ritzer’s purse and used her credit card to buy a movie ticket — but he said he would decide Tuesday morning whether to dismiss the unnatural rape charge would drop.

Legal observers have said another defense strategy might be to show that Ritzer died quickly to undermine the Commonwealth’s claim that Chism acted with extreme cruelty and cruelty, one of the three theories underlying first-degree murder in Underlying Massachusetts.
