Richard Leakey, Kenyan Fossil Hunter and Conservationist, Dies at 77
Richard Leakey, the Kenyan paleoanthropologist and fossil hunter whose discoveries of ancient human skulls and skeletons helped cement Africa’s place as the cradle of mankind, died in Kenya on Sunday. He was 77.
Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta announced the death in a statement but did not give a cause. Mr Leakey died at his home outside of Nairobi, said Prof Lawrence Martin, director of the Turkana Basin Institute at Stony Brook University on Long Island; Mr. Leakey was its founder.
Mr. Leakey’s parents, Louis and Mary Leakey, were prominent figures in paleontology, but Richard was initially determined to avoid his parents’ field and instead find work as a safari guide before eventually and perhaps inevitably succumbing to fossil fever.

Richard Leakey, a member of a renowned family of fossil hunters in Kenya who discovered skeletal remains that illuminated the study of human origins and became a best-selling author, television presenter and a powerful voice for the conservation of African wildlife, died January 2 at his home in Kona Baridi in the Ngong Hills outside of Nairobi. He was 77.
The death was confirmed by Trish Sewe, a spokeswoman for WildlifeDirect, an organization Mr. Leakey helped found to protect endangered animals. The cause was not disclosed.
Mr. Leakey was a third generation Kenyan descended from English missionaries who went to Africa in the 19th century. Spending most of his life in his native country, he always considered himself Kenyan and more broadly African. When Kenya gained independence from Britain in 1963, Mr. Leakey chose Kenyan citizenship. He spoke Swahili and other African languages.

His parents, Louis and Mary Leakey, were celebrated paleoanthropologists who had been searching for fossils in East Africa since the 1930s. Their discoveries of skulls and other remains in Tanzania’s Olduvai Gorge helped prove that human life first arose in Africa.
Mr. Leakey made his first fossil discovery at the age of 6 – the jawbone of an extinct giant pig – but throughout his adolescence he had no intention of pursuing his parents’ profession. He dropped out of school at 16, became a pilot and ran a safari business for a few years. But the lure of the fossil banks remained strong, and his discovery of a mandible from the genus Australopithecus, an early hominid, put him back in the field.
Mr. Leakey, educated by his parents, did not go to college and did not call himself a scientist.
“I’m not a biologist. I’m not an evolutionist,” he told an interviewer for the reference book Current Biography in 1995. “I’m a naturalist.”

During an airplane flight near the Kenya-Ethiopia border in 1967, Mr. Leakey looked down and saw that the geological formation surrounding Lake Turkana (then called Lake Rudolf) could be a promising source of fossils. He didn’t tell his father about it until they met National Geographic Society officials in Washington the next year. Mr. Leakey, then 23, requested financial support to begin exploring the site and received a generous grant.
He and a group of fossil hunters known as the “hominid gang” began excavating at Lake Turkana and soon discovered many remarkable artifacts – leading to a rivalry with his father and a rift that lasted for years.
Mr. Leakey and his team found nearly 2-million-year-old Stone Age tools, an Australopithecus skull, and in 1972 a 1.9-million-year-old skull of a large-brained species that was an ancestor of modern humans. The skull, known by its museum registration number 1470, was eventually determined to belong to a new species, Homo rudolfensis.

Mr. Leakey showed the skull to his father, whose pride in his son’s discovery led to an immediate reconciliation. Louis Leakey died days later.
The fossil record at Lake Turkana led Mr. Leakey to propose a theory that different forms of early human life did not necessarily follow one another in a continuous line of evolutionary progress. Instead, he said there is evidence that at least three different species of early humans lived in the same place at more or less the same time, 1.5 million to 2.5 million years ago. The idea is now widely accepted by scientists who believe four different forms of early humans lived there.
“He made East Africa the central playing field for the study of human evolution,” said Lawrence Martin, director of the Turkana Basin Institute, which Mr. Leakey co-founded in partnership with New York’s Stony Brook University, in an online National Geographic obituary. “Through good luck, good luck, good organization, hard work, he really found a place that has turned out to be a mother vein.”

Mr. Leakey outlined his ideas in several books, including the bestsellers Origins (1977) and People of the Lake (1978), both co-written with Roger Lewin. Mr. Leakey, who was on the cover of Time Magazine in 1977 and host of the popular BBC series The Making of Mankind, which first aired in 1981, believed that the first links in the human evolutionary chain went back more than 7 million years.
In 1984, he and his team, led by paleontologist Kamoya Kimeu, found an almost complete skeleton of a Homo erectus boy believed to be about 12 years old at Lake Turkana. At 1.5 million years old, it is the most complete skeleton ever found of early humans.
Mr. Leakey described the thrill of discovering the skeleton in a 1992 book Origins Reconsidered, written with Lewin:
“How human he looked in these surroundings! It was a moving moment for me. … This was a deeper emotion, one that stems from the wide arc of prehistory that I’m allowed to see in my work. I realized I was confronting a link in the chain that connects me today to the earliest human ancestors, ape-like creatures who lived perhaps 7.5 million years ago.”
Richard Erskine Frere Leakey was born in Nairobi on December 19, 1944, the second of three sons. (One sister died in infancy.)

He spent much of his childhood working alongside his parents. The family had close ties to Kenya’s native black population, which once resulted in Mr Leakey’s white schoolmates taunting him, locking him in a cage and urinating on him.
In the mid-1960s, Mr Leakey went to Britain with the aim of furthering his education, but ran out of money and returned to Kenya with the equivalent of a high school diploma. In addition to his field research and other projects, he began working for the National Museums of Kenya in 1968. Six years later he became director and was instrumental in making Kenya’s science and culture museums among the best in Africa. He issued a ruling that all artefacts unearthed in Kenya must remain in the country.
In 1989, Mr. Leakey was appointed head of the Kenya Wildlife Service with the aim of reducing poaching of wildlife, particularly elephants and rhinos. Mr. Leakey persuaded the World Bank and other international donors to give the country $150 million to improve animal welfare. He organized the burning of Kenya’s 12-ton stash of confiscated ivory to prevent it from being sold. President Daniel arap Moi gave park rangers the power to shoot poachers on sight. Mr. Leakey resigned from his post in 1994 after disagreements with political leaders.

Blunt and forthright, Mr. Leakey did not shy away from disagreements with scientists, political opponents, or even members of his family. He had a loaded gun in his briefcase.
“When I was head of the Kenya Wildlife Service, I had five bodyguards, day and night, 24 hours a day,” Mr Leakey told Newsweek in 2014. “And I needed her. There were many, shall we say, interesting incidents.”
Mr. Leakey’s first marriage to Margaret Cropper ended in divorce. Since 1970, survivors have included his wife, the former Meave Epps, a paleoanthropologist who made significant discoveries of her own; a daughter from a first marriage; two daughters from a second marriage; two brothers; and three grandchildren.
Throughout his life, Mr. Leakey was prone to illness and mishaps, beginning with a fractured skull in his youth. He developed an infection that led to chronic kidney disease and had two kidney transplants, including one in 1979 from a brother, Philip, from whom he had been estranged for 10 years. In 1993, Mr. Leakey’s single-engine plane crashed – he suspected sabotage – resulting in the amputation of both legs below the knee. Within a few weeks he learned to walk on prostheses. After years in the sun, he developed many cancerous lesions that had to be removed. In 2013 he had a liver transplant.
In the mid-1990s, Mr. Leakey helped found a new political party called Safina (Swahili for “Noah’s Ark”) to challenge what he saw as corrupt Kenyan political leaders. He was attacked in the street by thugs with whips and clubs, but he was elected to Parliament along with some other members of his party.
He was appointed head of Kenya’s civil service in 1999, only to resign after two years for political interference. From 2002 to 2015, Mr. Leakey spent his time between Kenya and New York, where he was Professor of Anthropology at Stony Brook University on Long Island and Director of the Turkana Basin Institute.
He returned to Kenya permanently in 2015, serving as chairman of the country’s Wildlife Service for three years and raising money for a planned human origins museum.
“I am determined,” he said in 1996, “not to end up as a frail old man in a wheelchair who has done nothing and therefore has nothing of worth to look back on.”
