“I would say it was probably the best race ever in Olympic history,” said Benjamin. “I don’t think any other race compares to what we just did about two hours ago. It’s undeniable. There’s nothing that compares to what just happened out there.”

At the US Olympic Trials in June, Benjamin nearly broke the event’s long-standing world record by being just 0.05 seconds from the mark set by Kevin Young in winning Olympic gold for the USA in 1992 – 46.78 seconds . But at the finals in Tokyo, it wasn’t just Benjamin and Warholm who broke that record – Alison dos Santos of Brazil, who won the bronze medal, also defeated Young’s legacy.
