Randall King Offers a ‘Shot’ of Classic Country on Full-Length Debut ‘I’m the Bartender on This Album’

As Texas-native hardcore country singer Randall King prepares for the March 18 release of Shot Glass, his full-length major label debut album with Warner Music Nashville, he’s been riding a wave of momentum. Marty Stuart invited King to his Grand Ole Opry debut, a lifelong dream King fulfilled this week. He opens shows for ’90s country stars Tracy Lawrence and Clay Walker and has previously co-written a song with Garth Brooks.

With fellow Texans and country neo-traditionalists Parker McCollum and labelmate Cody Johnson making Billboard’s country charts, King is poised to make an impression with his own brand of ice-cold country. On Shot Glass, King teamed up with Bart Butler and Ryan Gore, known for their work with another neo-traditionalist, Jon Pardi. King co-wrote seven of the album’s eleven tracks.

Essentially a concept album, Shot Glass revolves around a honky tonk bar, with each song providing the perspective of one of the bar’s patrons. Written by Brett James and Tony Lane, the fiddle-and-steel-drenched title track is the project’s emotional pulse, a song King has shelved for nearly three years.

“I thought Blake Shelton or Garth could do it, but we ended up getting it,” says King. “In the song you take a shot and get hit by a memory. During this song, several memories haunt you, and you step back and say, “How does all this fit in a shot glass?” So we took that concept and expanded it. I’m the bartender on this album and each song is an individual taking a shot at the bar and then you watch it all unfold.”

Though King tells countless stories on set, he has a special affinity for “Middle of Nowhere Church,” a tribute to the transformative power of love.

“It’s about driving in the country and seeing this beacon, a church,” he explains. “If you’ve ever driven through West Texas, you’ve seen these random churches, literally in the middle of nowhere. It is also a reflection of growth. I was pretty wild back then, but I believe in the power of true love. My girlfriend made me a better man and ‘Middle of Nowhere Church’ is that redemption song.”

Raised in Hereford, Texas, King soaked up the strains of George Strait, Garth Brooks and Alan Jackson while driving his parents’ ’93 Chevy Suburban. Since King’s father was a trucker, Roger Miller’s “King of the Road” was another favorite. On King’s new album, “Roger, Miller Lite and Me” is a whimsical tribute to Miller’s writing style.

“I love Roger Miller’s phrasing and the random words he throws in and his rhyme scheme. He manipulates words to fit a pattern, and I think that’s brilliant,” says King, who wrote the song with Brandon Kinney. “We threw in some of Roger’s titles. It’s just a big tip of the hat to one of our heroes. And it’s a beer-drinking song, too.”

A few other tracks, “Around Forever” and “I’ll Fly Away,” were previously on King’s 2020 EP “Leanna,” a song project honoring his late sister Leanna, who died of liver failure in April 2020 at the age of 32.

The cover artwork for the Leanna EP featured a yellow rose along with his late sister’s signature taken from a page in a notebook she kept. King’s family sang gospel songs to Leanna in her final moments, and “I’ll Fly Away” was the song they sang as she died.

“My sister has been to every show she could possibly be on,” says King. “Every time I’ve been to West Texas, she’s been there. When I played at the Ryman [Auditorium], she was there. My sister was absolutely my biggest supporter, my biggest fan. She had tattoos of my logos and my lyrics. My sister was everything and I sang her ‘I’ll Fly Away’ to Jesus Home. And every time I play west Texas, I still look through the bars looking for them.”

King’s Shot Glass rings with a country style forged through years of playing in dusty, beer-soaked honky-tonks as well as countless songwriting sessions honing his craft. In 2013, King released an indie project Old Dirt Road. The next year, after a show in San Angelo, Texas, he met music executive Scott Gunter.

“Scott Gunter is the reason I have everything,” says King. “He emailed me later, and at first I was like, ‘This isn’t real. Someone from Nashville didn’t come to Texas, that doesn’t happen anymore.” But it did. At the time he said: “You have a great voice and good songs, but you don’t have the song yet. Keep writing and if I can help in any way I will.” I started sending him songs and met him in person in Nashville in 2015. So when I wrote Another Bullet, he felt like it was the right thing to do. He sent me to Nashville to write in 2016.”

Those songs led to King’s indie EP Another Bullet in 2016, and in 2017 he signed with Howie Edelman’s Durango Artist Management, which also manages Johnson and others. By 2018, King signed a publishing deal with BMG, which led to this valuable co-writing session with Brooks.

“My publisher, [BMG’s] Chris Oglesby, had suggested my songs to Garth in hopes of a cut,” King recalls. “Garth liked my songs and my voice, so my publisher asked if he would be willing to write with me.” The song they wrote, “The Road I’m On,” also serves as the name of Brooks’ A&E special from The 2019 and was the first track on Brooks’ 2020 album Fun.

“We wrote the first verse and chorus and started on the second verse,” he says of this writing session. “The next day he sent me the whole song. Just hearing him sing something we wrote together, I grew up with him and Strait and Alan so it’s a different ballgame.”

Four record labels were interested in signing King before he finally landed a deal with Warner Music Nashville in 2019, shortly after releasing the Leanna EP, followed by a five-song live concert EP, Honky Tonk BS.

“There was a lot of great potential,” he says of his discussions with labels. “There were also a lot of labels that didn’t even take the time to look at us, we were just cold. But what sealed the deal was Warner letting us be ourselves. You’ve seen what we built and it works. They also let me put out the Leanna EP. They didn’t choose the songs – we made the record and brought it to them. They supported it 100%. And they let us release the live project. Being a young artist and putting out a concert record that’s country as hell is the greatest blessing.”

The early days of the COVID-19 pandemic presented challenges for this much-travelled artist, who was used to performing over 150 shows a year, but King was determined to find a way to keep the music going.

“We thought, ‘If the restaurants open, why can’t the bars open and treat it like a Daggum restaurant? Let’s set up tables there. You put on your mask, sit at the table, take it off. Someone comes to serve you the drinks, just like in a restaurant.” We started selling out these half-capacity bars. It kept us going, fed our families. We went ahead and played about 90 shows in 2020 and then last year everything started to go back to normal. I understand what the pandemic was, but don’t let fear keep you from life. You just can’t. You have to do something.”

Now he’s touring with Walker and Lawrence, and despite having a co-sign from one of music’s biggest superstars, King still has a few items left on his bucket list. And of course, these endeavors are pure country: Tops writes with Strait and his son Bubba. “I got to write with [longtime Strait songwriter] Dean Dillon, and he was an incredible songwriter,” he says. “I would love to write with Alan Jackson one day. You speak of a songwriter, that’s top notch.”

Randall King Live – Waco & The Heart of Texas

One of the country’s new generation of modern traditionalists, Warner Music Nashville artist Randall King has never lived outside the endless plains of West Texas, and his sound is imbued with their timeless beauty, which is at once gritty and graceful. He grew up singing in the back seat of a ’93 Chevy Suburban imitating the straight country singing of stars like Keith Whitley, George Strait, Alan Jackson and John Anderson and over the years has been drawn to the electrifying energy of modern stars like Eric Church , Dierks Bentley and Jason Aldean. After years of hustle and a road warrior diet of 150 shows a year, King produced and released 2016’s defiant EP Another Bullet, followed by a 2018 self-titled album.

Produced by traditional torchbearers Bart Butler and Ryan Gore (Jon Pardi), King brings an organic, timeless sound to mainstream country – his brand new track, ‘Record High’, available now everywhere, features loaded steel guitar, wide open Vocals and powerful, hard rocking rhythm. Basking in redemption from heartbreak and honkytonk amnesia, it is sure to be an addition to country line dance playlists around the world. With over 80 million career streams to his name and more new music on the horizon, King looks to the future everywhere, everywhere with music that captures the essence of a western poet who has never been afraid to be himself.
