Undateable’s Ron Funches Lost 100 Pounds – That’s how he did it

Undated fans may have noticed that Shelly has been looking a lot slimmer lately!

Ron Funches has lost an incredible 100 pounds. – the 5’11” actor has lost from 355 lbs. to 245 lbs. – in the past year by sticking to a healthy diet and incorporating exercise into his routine. He was motivated to lose the weight after his mother had expressed concern for his health.

Receive push notifications with news, features and more.

“My mother had mentioned a few times that she was worried and she had never mentioned it before. When she brought it up, it caught my eye,” Funches, 32, tells PEOPLE. “And then I have my son [Malcolm] who is 12 and I saw that his habits were not [healthy] and that I was probably a bad influence on him. I wanted to change that.”

Another motivating factor was seeing yourself on TV.

“It definitely helps if you can see yourself,” says Funches. “You look at your show and you’re like, ‘I didn’t think I was that tall!'”

Funches decided in December 2014 to get serious about his weight loss. He overhauled his diet, cutting out sweets and sugary drinks, including his beloved Cherry Coke.

“It’s my favorite thing to do,” says the actor. “I love a good Roy Rogers or Shirley Temple and I had to give them up. And Philly cheesesteaks. I love Philly cheesesteaks and now they really are gone.”

Now Funches makes healthy choices throughout the day. For breakfast, he eats Greek yogurt with fruit and a crunchy granola, or oatmeal with fruit and berries, or peanut butter. Lunch is a turkey sandwich or small burrito, and dinner is stir-fried chicken or halibut.

“I’ve never been interested in athletics or any other team sport, so it’s completely new to me,” he says.

Funches meets with his trainer Jorgen DeMay — to whom he was introduced by Undateable executive producer Bill Lawrence — three times a week for cardio, strength-training and boxing sessions, and on the days he works out alone, he goes for two jogs Miles on a slant twice a day.

“I’ve also occasionally taken a spin class and am considering taking a boxing class,” says Funches.

Funches says the best part about losing weight was all the energy he has now.

“I can do a lot more things without being tired and sweaty,” he says. “And I like nice clothes, so it’s nice to be able to buy a nice jacket. When you reach a certain height as a man, all the shirts end up with huge dogs on them or something!”

His healthy lifestyle has also influenced his son Malcolm.

“It sparked his interest in athletics,” says Funches. “He wants to start skateboarding.”

Now Funches and his son go hiking together twice a week.

Actor Ron Funches Lost 140 Pounds, And Here’s The Moment He Realized What This Meant For His Career

The bottom line, he said, is that you can learn a lot about people by changing the way you look.

Actor and comedian Ron Funches recently made a cameo appearance in AP Bio, a sitcom on NBC. The scene: He played the role of a janitor. The script called for him to meet a teacher who would reject him.

The directors shouted “Cut”. They huddled together. They came back to Funches and said, ‘Hey, can you hold that butt? We watch this and can’t understand why she would reject you.”

It was an aha moment for Funches, who has lost 140 pounds over the course of two years.

“I was like, ‘Oh, no one would have said that when I was 360 pounds,'” Funches said in a recent interview with The Sporkful, a food-themed podcast.

In the candid chat with host Dan Pashman, Funches discusses how his weight loss has changed his perception of Hollywood, as well as the reactions of friends who he recognizes never got to see past his weight.

What motivates Funches to lose weight

Funches, who released a new stand-up comedy special called “Giggle Fit” earlier this year, said “aesthetics” helped him motivate his weight loss. But more seriously, he had some major health concerns that fueled his transformation.

“I would die,” he said to Pashman.

When he weighed 360 pounds, he wasn’t breathing normally. His knees hurt. He had sleep apnea. People who cared for him were concerned about the obesity-related health problems he was suffering from.

Aside from his health, however, Funches recognized that he was being typecast in Hollywood. His weight limited the types of jobs available to him — he was offered roles like “homeless man” or “gang member.”

Funches began working with a personal trainer and trained six days a week. He radically changed his eating habits, eliminating burgers, steaks and rotisserie chicken from his daily diet and adding grilled chicken and asparagus. In the episode, Funches told Pashman that he likes his oatmeal with a sprinkling of cinnamon, some raisins and almond butter, which sounds a far cry from the types of meals Funches used to eat.

Funches also said his girlfriend helped him understand why he was struggling with the weight. He’s not good when it comes to moderation, he said.

“It’s one of the reasons I’m good at comedy,” Funches said. “Everything I love, I usually take to the handle.”

Understanding this about himself may have been the key to his weight loss. He said that while his friends can indulge in pizza and go on and off their diets, “I’m not the type to have clandestine pizza because I can’t stop,” Funches said.

But with that said, he realizes he can go to extremes and makes sure dieting doesn’t become an eating disorder.

How Weight Loss Affected His Acting and Comedy Career

During the podcast, Funches reminisces about a time when he had a role on “New Girl.” Although he excelled in comedy for a decade, the role simply had to take off his shirt and spin.

“It didn’t make me feel good,” he said.

In the Sporkful interview, Funches and Pashman discussed how fat people are often cast in roles so their looks are what’s supposed to be funny — and that’s mean.

Funches explains that he’s more of an “everyman guy.”

“People cheer me on. I have to show them who I am. I’m not a gang member. I’m a leading man,” said Funches, who has had roles on shows like Undateable, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and voice talent for Trolls.

Now he’s starting to get these kinds of roles — and when the script has him making out with a woman, it’s no joke.

How weight loss changed his friendships

Funches also addressed how his friends were reacting to his weight loss. Some have been super supportive, he said. But others, he has learned, have had a hard time seeing beyond his weight.

After some people got down to 220 pounds, they were stunned and said things like “Wow! I didn’t even know it was you,” he said. For him, that meant they could never see past his weight.

Others, he said, point out that he doesn’t have as much fun as he did when he was overweight. In a comedy routine, Funches shared some of the reactions he’s gotten: “You used to be funny. Just eat cheesesteaks and sweat all the time. We miss this guy. Now all you want to do is eat oatmeal and work out. Pooh. You should have fun again.”

The bottom line, he said, is that you can learn a lot about people by changing the way you look.

“I learned who my true friends are and who will definitely treat me the same,” Funches said. “I think that’s valuable information.”
