Ryan Cochran-Siegle is one of many skiers in his family, and his aunts Lindy and Marilyn and Uncle Bob are also US Olympic ski teamers.

The legend of the Cochran family is prevalent in American ski racing history, only slightly blunted by the passing of years and gradual distancing from the simpler time it represents. Mickey and Ginny were in their thirties and had four children when they built Cochran’s Ski Area. To be honest, there were hundreds of similar little hills with rope tows powered by tractor engines all over New England. None of them produced four Olympians like the Cochran Hill: Marilyn, Barbara (known as Barbara Ann in her youth), Bob and Lindy.
Barbara won the slalom in 1972 by just 0.02 seconds over Danielle Debernard of France; no US skier had won a gold medal since Andrea Mead Lawrence won the slalom and giant slalom in 1952. Barbara’s gold came at the age of 21 but before the age of professionalism; She retired from ski racing at the age of 23. She married Drew Siegle and they had two children before divorcing in 1993 when Ryan was 18 months old.
By then the next generation had graduated from the little hill in Richmond; six would make the US ski team, including Ryan’s cousin Jimmy Cochran, who competed in the 2006 and 2010 Olympics. Ryan joined the ski team in 2011 but has racked up the ski racer’s plethora of injuries, including major surgeries on both knees. But he bounced back, winning a Super-G race at the gnarly Bormio race hill in December 2020. “He was really, really good at skiing back then,” says NBC analyst and two-time Olympic gold medalist Ligety. โHe took his technical (slalom and giant slalom) skiing experience and applied it to speed races (downhill and super-G, a fast race with more turns than a downhill, literally a super giant slalom). This crash came just like he drove really well.”
That was the crash in Kitzbรผhel, in which Cochran-Siegle broke a cervical vertebra. He underwent surgery on February 9, 2021, 364 days before his silver medal. “It’s full circle,” he said. But not fast. His best result since was a fourth place finish on the same Bormio hill in December. In China, he saved himself from a potentially horrific fall in first downhill practice and was the top US downhill finisher in 14th place. But he still didn’t seem to be at his best.
That changed on Monday evening (Tuesday morning in China). “I just trusted everything I was and knew I was a good skier,” he said. “I performed as I wanted to perform,” he said. โI tried to push the line as hard as I was comfortable. Battle. Things came my way quickly, but I was in control.
The medal was the first in alpine skiing for the USA at these games. Cochran-Siegle is the fourth American man to win a medal in the super-G, after Tommy Moe (silver 1994), Bode Miller (silver 2010, bronze 2014) and Andrew Weibrecht (bronze 2010, silver 2014).
None of them carry the historical weight of Cochran-Siegle. He says he’s never felt any pressure to live up to the expectations raised by his family name. “All my family has always said is that they’re proud of me,” he said. “I think it might have been pressure for some people. For me it was motivating.โ
Thousands and miles and 13 time zones away, Barbara thought of her parents beginning with her hands and a dream. “They look down and are so proud,” she said. And there’s this: Cochran’s Ski Area is still very much in business, not just living history, but a place to make more of it. A lift pass costs $19. “Two hundred and ninety-five dollars for a season pass,” says Barbara. “This is for a family.”
