Sara James is an award-winning correspondent for Dateline NBC, where her work has earned her an Emmy, multiple Gracies and a Headliner Award, among others. Since joining the show in December 1994, she has covered a wide range of stories across the United States and abroad.

James won a 2004 Headliner Award for her report “Meet Jane Doe” about the last victim to be discharged from the hospital on 9/11. James also received a 2004 Gracie Award from American Women in Radio and Television for her report “Life in the Fast Lane” on the devastating effects of methamphetamine addiction on women.

James received another Gracie Award for his work in 2001, including “The Long Journey Back,” which chronicled a family’s harrowing ordeal following the Columbine High School massacre. Her coverage of the murders also earned her an Emmy Award for Outstanding Coverage of a News Story in 1999 for Killing at Columbine.

In 1999, James traveled to Afghanistan’s dangerous border to report on the brutal Taliban regime and its treatment of women. In 1998, she became the first network reporter to travel to the bottom of the Atlantic to the site of Titanic for the Dateline/Discovery special, “Raising the Titanic.” James’ Stolen Generation report on the forced removal of Australian Aboriginal children from their mothers was awarded the 1998 Overseas Press Club of America Citation for Excellence.

Domestically, James has covered a variety of turning points, including the Oklahoma City bombing and the first World Trade Center bombing. Her story of the debilitating effects of obsessive-compulsive disorder received top honors from the American Psychiatric Association. Internationally, her reporting duties have taken her to the former Yugoslavia to cover the Bosnian war crimes tribunal, across Asia to cover medical experiments carried out on prisoners of war by the Japanese during World War II, to London to cover the death of Princess to report to Diana and to the Sudan to investigate contemporary slavery. The story of Sudanese slavery earned James the prestigious National Press Club award for international reporting in 1997. In addition, James received the New York Festival Award and an award from American Women in Radio and Television for her story about the first American woman considered for the space program.

In addition to her newsmagazine responsibilities, James also serves as Assistant Co-Host and Assistant News Anchor on NBC News’ Today and Weekend Today, and MSNBC.

Prior to her current role, James served as national correspondent for NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw from November 1994. She reported on the US Mission in Somalia; Their coverage of the hunger and fighting took them deep into the countryside prior to the arrival of the US Marines. James also traveled to Haiti during the turbulent days of the Cedras regime, where she reported on the killing squads terrorizing the local population.
