After a seven-year investigation, the case was dropped, but was returned in 1994 when new leads to her executioner came into question. Sara Poteet is the little lady of Shannon Poteet who was absent again in 1986 and later tracked down useless.

After the death of her mother, Sara was raised alongside her father, Lonnie Poteet, when on November 8, Shannon left Sara with him and stayed away endlessly. The investigation into Shannon’s disappearance was eventually dropped eight years after her body was discovered, so her executioner was hardly ever discovered.

Shannon’s remains, corroborated by dental records, had been discovered on September 30, 1994 by a rock climber walking through an outdoor forest. Her death was ruled a homicide, although experts could not confirm her cause of death.

Sara’s father was among the list of potential suspects, similar to the friend disappearance case, but there was no evidence against him, Shannon Poteet’s daughter Sara Poteet now resides in the US.

Meanwhile, she has maintained a reserved character for a considerable time, so some information about her is currently unavailable in the media. Lonnie recently said that discovering about her mother, who recently got up and left her, was a huge gut revelation.

As “Cool Justice” reports, Siegler is also investigating Lonnie’s longtime companion Clay Kjos, who has been suspected for a long time. Earth admitted seeing Lonnie that Friday night, at the site where Shannon is set to be killed. Shannon’s misplaced car was discovered by fortunate circumstances.

Shannon’s blood was found in the storage compartment and DNA takes a look at the results matched with Sara. At the level when brokers approached Lonnie Poteet, he denied the expense and promptly closed the meeting.

‘Cold Justice’ investigates Shannon Poteet’s 1986 murder

In the fall of 1986, 21-year-old Shannon Poteet, a warm-hearted and outgoing Native American from Ferry, Washington, was ready for a fresh start. She was in the process of divorcing her then-husband, Lonnie Poteet, of 24 years, worked for the United States Forest Service, and was raising their 11-month-old daughter, Sara.

But in November 1986, Shannon disappeared. According to Lonnie, he left Sara with him on November 8 and never returned. Three days later, his car was found in the city with blood in the trunk. The driver’s seat was oddly pushed back as far as it could go, Shannon was only 5ft 1 tall.

The investigation into Shannon’s disappearance eventually cooled until eight years later. On September 30, 1994, Shannon’s remains, identified by dental records, were found by a hiker walking outside through a forest.

On an episode of “Cold Justice,” airing on Saturdays at 8/7c for oxygen, veteran prosecutors Kelly Siegler and Cpt. Terri Hook of the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office in Wisconsin goes to Ferry to work the case.

Working alongside her is Ferry County Sheriff Ray Maycumber, who was investigating Shannon’s disappearance, Fmr. Det. Mike George of the Ferry County Sheriff’s Office and Fmr. Lieutenant Vern King of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Although investigators were unable to determine Shannon’s cause of death, it was determined that her manner of death was homicide. As in many cases where a spouse disappears, her husband was considered a person of concern.

The Cold Justice team begins screening potential suspects, including Lonnie. They ask how he felt about the breakup with the couple to see if it could be linked to motive in any way.

Through civilian witnesses, they learn that Lonnie was unemployed, unfaithful, and had a very short backup. He was said to be instantly enraged and capable of physical violence. He is said to have once headbutted Shannon. “He was just a brute,” said one person.

They also discover that Shannon’s daughter Sara, now an adult, was told by Lonnie that her mother, who was devoted to her daughter, had just gotten up and left her. “It was pretty heartbreaking,” says Sara.

Siegler is also considering Lonnie’s close friend Clay Kjos, who, according to Cold Justice, is under suspicion for various reasons.

“He admitted seeing Lonnie that Friday night, and it’s believed Shannon was murdered,” Siegler says. A witness also reported that he appeared to have seen blood on Clay’s pants and shoes that same night. Could he have helped his friend kill his wife? Or could he have murdered Shannon alone?

In a fortunate turn of events, Shannon’s abandoned vehicle was recovered. He was taken to the sheriff’s department for processing and has been there ever since. The evidence from the trunk will be sent for DNA analysis.

Although the researchers don’t have a sample of Shannon’s DNA, they do have Sara’s and are running a maternity calculation. The results show that there is a greater than 99.9 percent chance that the blood on the carpet in the trunk of the car was Sara’s mother’s.

“The blood on the trunk of this car is from Shannon,” says Siegler. “This is undeniable physical evidence that we can now use to conclude our theory of what happened to Shannon.”

Analysis of Kjo’s shoes shows that the substance they contained was not blood. After questioning Kjos, the team concludes that he is cooperative, consistent and “doesn’t seem like he’s trying to hide anything”.

Focusing squarely on Lonnie Poteet, the team delves into the couple’s estranged marriage by soliciting testimony from multiple witnesses.

A friend says that Lonnie and Shannon were diametrically opposed in every way and that he apparently considered her one of his “possessions”.

Shannon’s attorney states that she “was convinced that she didn’t want to be with him anymore” and that she didn’t want Sara with him. Shannon was afraid of Lonnie, according to the attorney, who adds that Shannon told him Lonnie had made death threats.

Investigators learned from the pastor the Poteets went to for marriage counseling just before Shannon’s disappearance that Lonnie said his wife left town with a friend and left the baby behind. That didn’t match what Lonnie originally told investigators.

With that in mind, investigators want to find out if Lonnie has admitted anything after all these years of speaking to the witnesses closest to him.

Ed Bacon, with whom Lonnie went to school and played football, claims that he saw Lonnie driving Shannon’s car the same night she was believed to have been murdered.

Lonnie’s brother Jeff Owens says his brother has had many anger issues. Owens also claims that during a night of drinking, Lonnie said, “I can’t believe I did it.” Owens claimed he asked Lonnie if she had anything to do with Shannon’s disappearance, and Lonnie never warned him that to ask again. “He didn’t say he killed her,” says Owens. “But I think that’s the closest thing I’ll get to a confession from him.”

When investigators drive to Montana to speak with Lonnie Poteet, he denies any guilt before closing the meeting. He says further communication will be through his attorney.

After Kjos was removed from the suspect list, investigators take their case to the Ferry County District Attorney in hopes of indicting Lonnie Poteet for the 1986 murder of Shannon Poteet.

After the meeting, Siegler tells Sara and her aunts that the prosecutor’s office is very positive about it. “She likes what she hears,” Siegler says, “and all the evidence points to Lonnie.”
