Steven Adams

New Zealand basketball player

Steven Funaki Adams (born July 20, 1993) is a New Zealand professional basketball player for the Memphis Grizzlies of the National Basketball Association (NBA). After playing a season with his hometown club, the Wellington Saints, in 2011, Adams relocated to the United States in 2012 to play college basketball for Pittsburgh.

Adams was selected by the Oklahoma City Thunder with the 12th overall pick in the 2013 NBA draft. He was the Thunder’s primary starting center for six straight seasons. In November 2020, Adams was traded to the New Orleans Pelicans after seven years in Oklahoma City. In August 2021, he was dealt to the Grizzlies.

Early life[edit]

Steven Adams was born in Rotorua, New Zealand to a Tongan mother and English father. His father, Sid Adams, served in the Royal Navy and later settled in New Zealand, where he fathered 18 children with five wives.[1] Sid Adams was 2.11 meters tall and his children inherited his height: Steven Adams’ brothers averaged 2.06 meters tall while his sisters averaged 1.83 meters tall.[2 ] Two of his half-sisters are athletes: Dame Valerie Adams is a two-time Olympic and four-time world champion in the shot put[2] and Lisa Adams is a para-athlete who won gold in the shot put at the Paralympics.[3] His brothers Warren and Sid Jr. had careers in the New Zealand National Basketball League .

Sid Adams was in his 60s when his youngest child Steven was born, and Sid died of stomach cancer in 2006.[1] Adams has identified his father’s death as one of the defining events of his life. In a 2012 interview, Adams recalled:

Losing my father was a huge blow to me. I didn’t have that parental guidance, and I kind of took advantage of it because I was a stupid idiot. I decided a few times not to go to school, but to go when I felt like it. I always lied to my brothers and sisters. They would ask, “Are you going to school?” I would say yes. Eventually they found out.[2]

After the death of his father, his brother Warren rescued him from the streets of Rotorua and took him to Wellington.[6] Warren took charge of Adams and introduced him to Wellington basketball legend Kenny McFadden. McFadden accepted Adams into his basketball academy and Warren enrolled him at Scots College. The only rule McFadden had for Adams was that if he wanted to play basketball, he had to go to school every day. While Adams was under pressure to turn pro right out of high school because it was believed he would never qualify for the NCAA, Adams did well at Scots College and progressed through the NCAA Clearinghouse after graduating in December 2011 had done at Scots. 2]

High school and high school[edit]

After graduating from Scots College in December 2011, Adams enrolled for a semester at Notre Dame Preparatory School, a well-known basketball preparatory school in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. It was only arranged so he could get used to American basketball before signing on to Pittsburgh in June 2012.

In his lone season in Pittsburgh, Adams was named Big East Preseason Rookie of the Year and received Big East All-Rookie Team honors. He started all 32 games during the 2012-13 season and averaged 7.2 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game.

On April 2, 2013, Adams declared himself for the NBA draft, renouncing his final three years of college eligibility.

Career[edit]

Wellington Saints (2011)[edit]

In 2011, Adams played for the Wellington Saints of the National Basketball League.[11] He was not paid by the Saints to keep his college eligibility.[6][11] He was named NBL Rookie of the Year and helped the Saints win the championship. In 15 games for the Saints, he averaged 5.5 points and 4.1 rebounds per game.

The NBA has its own Aquaman, and he’s a Kiwi. The tall man has ice cold veins and remains calm and collected no matter the situation. The center is a rim guard that guards its post like an animal. His defensive qualities combined with his leadership qualities make him a useful asset. Born in Rotorua, New Zealand, he was the youngest child of Sid Adams, an Englishman who served in the Royal Navy. After graduating from high school in New Zealand at Scots College, he moved to the United States to pursue his dream. He joined Notre Dame Preparatory School before enrolling at the University of Pittsburgh. A year later, in 2013, he was drafted into the NBA draft. He was selected 12th overall in Round 1 by the Oklahoma City Thunder. An avid video gamer, he made the NBA All-Rookie Second Team in 2014. The gentle giant also played for the Wellington Saints and won the championship with them in 2011. For this he received no compensation from them that it did not prevent him from playing at college level in the USA. He has realized his dream, now all that’s missing is winning the title.
