In the 1990s, Atlanta’s upscale suburban community of Cascade Heights became an address associated with power, convenience, and prestige.
But on October 16, 1996, a shocking crime rocked the neighborhood. “An 911 call came in,” Clint Rucker, former executive district attorney, Fulton County, Georgia, told “The Real Murders of Atlanta,” which airs Sundays at 8:7c on Oxygen. “The next door neighbor reported that a young man, Raynard Cook, had come home from school and found his mother’s body in a pool of blood in the house.”

“She said, ‘If I had seen a bloodstain, it wouldn’t have been sitting on my couch,'” Rucker told producers. “So we knew Raynard was lying.”
Investigators focused on the murder weapon. They spoke to students at Woodward Academy and one told them that Raynard had bought a gun, a 9mm Glock pistol, for $150 two weeks before his mother was shot. That matched the type of gun used to kill the judge.
Since the Glock had a problem with the trigger mechanism, Raynard took it to a gun shop. When asked about the gun by authorities, Raynard said he discarded it because it was defective.
A family member then told investigators Raynard alleged that a masked man forced him at gunpoint to shoot his mother.
Despite this turn of events, Raynard was arrested. He was charged with malicious murder, felony murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm.
