Cunningham was a publisher at McPhee Gribble/Penguin for two years and a trade publisher at Allen & Unwin for ten years, where she was known for commissioning and editing innovative fiction and non-fiction. Books she worked on at McPhee Gribble included I Was a Teenage Fascist by David Greason, Glad All Over: The Countdown Years 1974-1987 by Peter Wilmoth and Holding the Man by Timothy Conigrave.

With Allen & Unwin she published Mark Davis’ Gangland: Cultural Elites and the New Generationalism.[1]

In 2004 her first novel, Geography, was published. In 2005 she was an Asialink resident in Sri Lanka providing research for her novel Bird, which follows the life of a singer and actress who became a Buddhist nun.[2]

In 2008, Cunningham became editor of Meanjin, wanting to make the literary magazine “lighter, more entertaining, but I don’t mean lightweight.”[6] She also wanted to attract a younger audience to the magazine.

During her tenure as editor, Cunningham significantly expanded the magazine’s online presence, launching several successful public events in Melbourne and Sydney (notably Meanland, in collaboration with Jeff Sparrow, editor of literary journal Overland) to stimulate public debate on issues surrounding the conduct digital publishing. In 2010 she resigned, claiming that she had been barred from discussions about the future of the publication and believed that the owner, Melbourne University Press, intended to stop publishing the print edition. “I wasn’t even formally consulted,” she told Crikey. “I know there was a feeling – expressed by MUP – that I wasn’t working closely enough with MUP and was being too independent. I saw it as my duty to maintain Meanjin’s separate identity.”[8]

Although there was speculation that Meanjin would switch to an online-only format,[9] MUP chairman Alan Kohler denied that this would be the case.[8]
