Archaeological site in Zimbabwe

Coordinates:

Ziwa ruins, enclosure view from afar.

Ziwa[1] is an archaeological site in Nyanga District, Zimbabwe which contains the remains of a vast late Iron Age agricultural settlement dating from the 15th century. Ziwa was declared a National Monument in 1946 and is currently being considered for inclusion on the World Heritage List. The site contains a wide variety of stone carving structures, including stone terraces that follow the contours of hills and steep landscapes. Archaeological investigations have also uncovered important aspects of pottery and rock art.

Before the site was declared a National Monument, Ziwa was part of the commercial farming area and was therefore privately owned. Great damage or deterioration of the antiques may have been caused during this period as the farmer used the property as a cattle ranch. Currently, a site museum (with tourist facilities such as camping, guided tours, hiking trails, bird watching, etc.) has been established to showcase Ziwa heritage and other archeological sites in Nyanga District.

Despite the village’s abandonment by its residents in the 18th century, Ziwa remained important to the later communities that settled in its vicinity.[2]

Description[edit]

Ziwa bears evidence of human occupation for all major archaeological periods identified in Zimbabwe’s archaeological sequence. This ranges from hunter-gatherer periods of the Stone Age to historical times. The 3,337 hectares (8,250 acres) of land include: Stone Age deposits, rock art sites, early farming community settlements, a later farming community landscape shaped by terraces and field systems, hill forts, pit structures and stone enclosures, iron smelting and forging furnaces, and numerous remains of smeared dwellings .

Ziwe Fumudoh

Nigerian-American comedian and writer

Ziwerekoru “Ziwe” Fumudoh[1] is a Nigerian-American comedian and author known for her satirical commentary on politics, race relations, and young adulthood.[2][3] She created the YouTube comedy show Baited with Ziwe and its later iteration Instagram Live,[4] she was a writer on Desus & Mero from 2018-2020,[5] and in 2018 she co-hosted the Hysteria podcast by Crooked Media.[6] Fumudoh stars in and is executive producer of the Showtime variety series Ziwe, which premiered in May 2021.[7][8]

Early life and education[edit]

Fumudoh grew up in Lawrence, Massachusetts, the second of three children of parents who immigrated to the United States from Nigeria after experiencing a civil war there.[3][9][10][11]

In 2010, Fumudoh graduated from Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts.[1][12] In 2014, she graduated from Northwestern University with a dual major in radio, television and film and African American Studies and a minor in creative writing: poetry. [3][13][14]

Career [edit]

Fumudoh was a summer internship at Comedy Central during her junior year of college, working on shows like The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. During her senior year, she did an internship as a writer for The Onion and took improv classes at the iO Theater.[16] After graduating, she began working as a screenwriter on The Rundown with Robin Thede.[5][15][16]

In 2017, Fumudoh founded Baited with Ziwe, a show on YouTube that originally starred some of her non-black friends, who tricked her into unknowingly committing racial faux pas.[5] It was an edited show with effects emphasizing when someone was being “baited,” first produced through her work at Lorne Michaels’ Above Average Productions.[9] During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Fumudoh moved the show from YouTube to Instagram Live with new guests weekly.[17] The new version had no impact, and the featured guests grew in popularity, including Caroline Calloway, Alison Roman, Alyssa Milano and Rose McGowan. Fumudoh asked the guests direct questions like “What quality do you like about black people?” and asked Roman to name five Asians, which she couldn’t. Fumudoh said she wasn’t trying to cancel anyone, but that the goal of her show is to facilitate good discussions about race while also entertaining people and criticizing the system, not individuals. She usually began each show by announcing, “This is a comedy show.”[20]

Fumudoh has appeared frequently on The Pop Show, a live show she created at Brooklyn’s Union Hall in which she performs original pop songs.

Fumudoh wrote jokes for Stephen Colbert.[5][15] She has been writing for The Onion since December 2013, contributing features and videos.[23]

In 2018, Fumudoh co-hosted Hysteria, a Crooked Media podcast.[6]

In 2019, Fumudoh joined the cast of Our Cartoon President as the voice of Kamala Harris. She also wrote the Season 3 episode Senate Control.

From 2018 to 2020, Fumudoh was a writer on the TV show Desus and Mero.[24][25] One Forbes reviewer wrote that she had “the confidence of an old comedy pro.”[15]

In August 2020, it was announced that Fumudoh is writing a book, The Book of Ziwe, a collection of humorous essays, for Abrams Books.[26] Release is scheduled for May 2, 2023.[27]

In October 2020, it was announced that Fumudoh would be working with Showtime on a new variety show, Ziwe.[28] The six-episode first season featured musical numbers, interviews with guests such as Gloria Steinem and Andrew Yang, and sketches. In addition to hosting the show of the same name, Fumudoh also writes and produces.[29] The show is notable for its colorful sets, musical numbers, and heavily decorated, wild costumes, on which Fumudoh collaborated with costume designer Pamela Shepard-Hill.[7]

In 2021, Fumudoh wrote for the Dickinson television series and appeared as Sojourner Truth in two episodes.[30]

Also in 2021, she played Sophie Iwobi, a comedic commentator on a late-night show resembling Ziwe, in a third-season episode of Succession. The character was tailored to more closely resemble Fumudoh after being cast.

Fumudoh has also written for publications including The Riveter Magazine, Reductress, The Daily Dot,[32] Into The Gloss – where she wrote a column entitled Operation Goo Goo Gah Gah[33] – Vulture[34] – where she wrote recaps for TV – and The New Yorker.
